Thread: Zill trouble

Tomorrow I have a performance with zils. Just a small one for my ex teacher is closing her bazaar and is throwing a party. It's Tamra Henna + a drum solo, both with zils.
Th choreo is so similar to what Naima Akef is dancing, so, gulp, it's a challenge. The drum solo is by my ex teacher and a bit too hectical for my taste.
I so wanted to use my heavy Zildyians this time for the unique singing tone. I tried and had trouble during the drum solo for it's fast and the zills mightn't sound clear enough, so will I use my Saroyans again? They're easier to play, but I so wanted to use the big ones...
would anyone say that Zildyians are not right for accompanying a drum solo (Suheir's tabla btw.) for they don't have the time to ring and sing?

I would use the smaller zills, since it's a fast routine. I don't think you have enough time to get used to holding your fingers farther apart to get a longer ringtone, for a fast

I'm having trouble with berry please forgive errors and xtra posts. I'd rather the rythm be correct, than the volume. Ihope you have a great time ! :-)

i'm curious, which Saroyans are you using?
Although i do find certain zill tones sound better with certain songs,I agree, accompanying the drum rhythm correctly is definitely more important.
Use the ones your comfortable with tomorrow and Practice with the Zildijians for a future show ;O)

I can't imagine watching a dancer perform a difficult choreography, with zills, and thinking 'she should have used different ones' -- I'd just be thinking 'YAYYYY!!!'

I understand your dilemma, though. I'm often torn between doing a thing the way I imagine it (and probably thought a month ago I'd have time to practice it!) or doing it the safer way. I've never regretted going the safe route.

Tamra Henna would have worked with the big zils, but the drum solo...only opening and closing makes those Zildyans sing, a little scratching on their rough surface, plus the weight, it is too much work on that drum solo.
For the Saroyans, I don't know the name, they're big and golden colour.

I'll try the Zildyians tomorrow again and if it's only a little off on the first try, I'll go for the Saroyans.

The advice I got LOOOONG ago was in case of doubt, use the smaller/faster/better controllable zills - following this advice has served me well.

Go with the Zills you feel comfortable with. Zildjians aren't for every situation - as you've figured out.

thank you ladies. I followed your advice and the zills immediately stopped to be an issue.
Here is the outcome. I'll leave it public for a couple of days only, for I'm not too happy with my stuff yet. I actually managed to do some things better than the last time I was recorded dancing that choreo, but the choreo deserves much better. I really love Naima Akef, her special charm, her hipwork-style when dancing to this music, and I'd like to integrate some of her stylization some time.
I'm not sure do I like the drum solo. I could have practised more but didn't have time for I was totally absorbed by troupe-rehearsals.
My arms are less stretched when playing zills I noticed.
