Thanks! That Prestige clip I wouldn't consider AmCab.The second one is though. Shadiah is a great dancer. She defines the style in the Detroit area.

Resurrecting this thread as I'm researching for an elusive clip of a Turkish dancer.

Please excuse my ignorance but, anybody can tell me what is american cabaret?
It appears to me a mix of levanese, turkish, greek influences but , i am right?
Some floor work as well. work af the veil is more compicated than in egyptian style. a lot of fingers cymbals. Is it right to say?

You're catching on. Some dancers however prefer the term vintage oriental.

Turkish Dancing

I totally love this clip. Unknown dancer to me. I find she has beautiful moves and I like her interpretation. But rather the costuming is AmCab than the dancing.

Her costume is a curious mixture of the old and new. No American caberet/vintage orientale dancer that I know of would ever cover her stomach up! That is an Egyptian influence from when the dancers in Egypt were not allowed to show their stomachs. The skirt to isn't quite right, not skimpy enough. It almost has a folkloric look to it. Except for the glitz and glitter of course.

I thought the Turkish bedleh, the long fringe, the romantic rose in her hair...could also be an improvised costume.

I think that is so.

It's totally créole, isn't it? But AmCab is, too! It's a créole style, like salsa music, and then became a style with recognizable codes and patterns... or?

Was there always the awareness of the different styles or did people just "bellydance" the way it was done around them?

For the most part we just danced. There was a difference in how we danced in the Greek clubs (Now I see it as traditional American Caberet or Vintage Oriental) vs the Arabic clubs, (more classical Egyptian). But we always attributed the fact that we danced differently was because the music played in the 2 venues were completely different. We adapted our steps to match the music that was being played.
