    The Fool Sings a Hero's Song: Shaaban Abdel Rahim, Egyptian Shaabi and the Video Clip Phenomenon.

    Although it focuses on the songs and persona of Shaaban abdel Rahim (the "I Hate Israel" singer), the article also provides some great background information about shaabi and its place in Egyptian society. Academic article, but highly readable.
