    what the....?

I just got a comment on one of my youtube videos which, if babelfish translated it from German properly, means "Lovely choreography of Shareen el Safy."

But the video in question is my own choreography! I actually became paranoid for a minute that I had subconsciously copied Shareen or something, because I do have her video teaching to this piece of music. I just went back and watched it and was relieved to see that there is absolutely zero in common between her dance and mine. Zero. Which is what I would have expected, since I hadn't watched the video since way before I started working on that piece of music myself.

Its this video in case anyone is wondering. I feel really unjustly accused.,f::

hmmmm. if it was me, i'd feel great that someone recognised the influences of shareen el safy in my dance. I only spent one weekend with her but she totally influences everthing i do even ten ++ years later.

    Re: what the....?

It's probably just poor fact checking. If the commenter had recognized the music as being a song Shareen el Safy uses for a widely taught choreography, s/he may have just assumed it was the same routine.

    Re: what the....?

Perhaps it was a case of something "lost in translation" (babelfish)? Maybe she meant to say "Lovely choreography to a popular piece that's been done before/different from one I've seen/compared to one by Shareen el Safy"??

Don't worry about it. REally, one comment out of 6 billion planetary inhabitants....and they're wrong anyway.

Isn't it a pinch that we freak out about 1 person's opinion, who is a complete stranger, instead of focusing on all the wonderful compliments we get from others?

    Re: what the....?

It sounds like an honest compliment to me, and I bet that the lady who wrote the comment just an honest mistake. In that light, chances are that it is actually a pretty awesome compliment.

    Re: what the....?

Maybe the correct translation is "lovelier that Shareen el Safy's Choreography" ? :-)

Nope, translation is fine, nothing got lost. But, I also don't get the sense of hidden critique from the choice of words .

    Re: what the....?

...or maybe they respect Shareen El Safy's work and thought the material looked like hers...which I would take as a compliment.

I have had comments like that made about my own performances or my dancers' performances from time to time. I take it as a compliment that they would see the quality of someone that is held in high esteem in my work whether it is through me or my dancers.

    Re: what the....?

I agree, I think they must have just assumed it was Shareen El Safy's choreo for some reason. I'd just reply to the comment with a correction that it's in fact your own work.

    Re: what the....?

Okay thanks everyone. I'm generally not paranoid.

Perhaps this comes too close to a conversation I had with the husband a week or so ago.

Me <with a stack of dance videos> I need to watch these several dancers dance to el hob kollu

    Husband: So you're copying.

Me: No, I just need some inspiration.

    Husband: You're copying!!

Me: No, I just need to get some ideas of how to generate energy during a certain passage of the music...

    Husband: You're copying!!

    I'm not copying!

I would chalk it up to last in translation through garblefish, unless you speak German.

    Re: what the....?

I can't speak to the choreography since I'm not familiar enough with Shareen's work. But I'd love to get more info on the music track - very nice music!
    A lovely performance too :-)

I do the same thing but I've wondered if it really comes down to copying. I don't think in the end that I do anything I saw. But maybe it makes me do something totally different than everything I saw.

    Re: what the....?

you answered perfectly well. Don't worry about that user, just registered a few days ago and has nothing to show for him/herself. But Reyhan from Frankfurt made you a compliment and she is a very respected and knowledgeable Egyptian style dancer in Germany. So don't worry about that silly allegation.
