Re: Clips of Turkish Style dancers
Let me jump into this interesting discussion, although I am very new to the forum.
I live in Istanbul and having "oriental" dance lessons for almost 2 years ... so I would say I dance Turkish Oriental. I also took many workshops with many "Turkish" teachers, but they frequently use Egyptian or Arabic musics instead of Turkish. In famous show restaulants, you will notice ( and be disappointed) they dance Egyptian style to Shik Shak Shok !!!
I LOVE clasic Turkish oriental in 80's, but it is sooo difficult to find a Turkish Oriental dancer/teacher, unless her/his style is roman style or roma-oriental.
I wonder if turkish dancers themselves don't much care if they dance to a Turkish music or not ... one of my teacher used to use Turkish musics but she mixes jazz and modern flavor in her dance style to make it "her own style". I see this behavior with many dancers here, and they don't very much appreciate beeing addressed as " Turkish Oriental". Very interesting...
Sorry for this long comment( and thanks for reading! ), but I couldn't hold is as "After all, what is Turkish Oriental??" is one of my biggest interest now.
Now, finally, here are my favorite clips!
Nesrin Topkapı
This may not meet the criteria as she dances to the Egiptian song ( if I am not wrong ) but you should see this!! This is what I classy and elegant Turkish Oriental.
(FYI, she is my teacher for 1 year now, and she uses Egyptian musics in her lessons ... so I would say that is her taste)
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/X8s2OT5D4w8&hl=ja_JP&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/X8s2OT5D4w8&hl=ja_JP&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Then "Turkish oriental with Turkish music"
Dilek
I saw her clips on YouTube, and I like her dance style ...
She is an award winner and based in San Diego but she is a Turkish. ( according to a description)
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4r46j_aTMAQ&hl=ja_JP&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4r46j_aTMAQ&hl=ja_JP&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>Last edited by Kraliche; 12-09-2009 at 04:08 AM.

Re: Clips of Turkish Style dancers
Hi Kraliche!
It's great to have someone from Turkey in this discussion.
Are there no teachers to teach Turkish Oriental at all?
Could you describe the style?
Nesrin dances breathtakingly beautiful, but it's difficult to judge a style if the music is Arab, the music programs attitude, flow and so on.
Apart from arm moves and a vague impression I have of Turkish dancers, I would really like to know what is the Turkish style of dancing - aside from Turkish Rom. I'll meet two Turkish dancers before christmas yet and I'll ask them, too.
Do you have clips of yourself doing Turkish Oriental to Turkish music?

Re: Clips of Turkish Style dancers
I see that Carey has deleted a bunch of her posts, I'm assuming because they were Arabicised Turkish? But I don't know why this one got deleted, so I'm reinstating it:

Reyhan Tusuz is just a Romany woman who lives in Istanbul doing her thing. She totally rocks it too. She has started teaching people out of her home in the last few years to help supplement her family's income. She is a must visit in my opinion for any Oriental dance visiting Istanbul.

Oh dear, why my favorite clip is not properly embeded?!?!
(can' I just copy and page from YouTube???)
Dilek
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r46j_aTMAQ]YouTube - Dilek, San Diego Turkish Belly Dancer Las Vegas Belly Dance Intensive Festival show[/ame]
She dances to a Turkish pop music with her Turkish Sytle (I think )... or do you call it Turkish flavored AmCab???
I know this is a thread to "clip" Turkish Oriental, not to "discuss", but just one more word or two ...
Yes my teachers use Egyptian/Arabic songs, but I think we have different interpretations and moves to them. We have more walking steps, more arm moves, strong accent, rather "on the beat" than "put pause" ...
If Turkish dancers don't mind using non-Turkish music, maybe I should follow them..c::

Re: Clips of Turkish Style dancers
I would say that the way turkish dancers do drum solos is very different from any Egyptian dancer I have ever seen.
Drum solo composed by Turkish musicians are very different in style and technique to the arabic one. In Egypt i saw one dancer in Luxor do a drum solo and in Cairo only Soraya ( from Brazil) makes it an important part of her show. In Istanbul you always have drum solos. In my opinion it is one of the differences in the styles today.
so I will risk posting clips from Didem and Tanyeli that is in my opinion still show turkish style
here the entrance is more turkish style ( but the drum solo isnt turkish music)

Re: Clips of Turkish Style dancers
And since the modern Turkish approach to drum solos is so unique, I did want to add my favorite Didem tabla solo, it is very Turkishy:

Hm, look at 0:58.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUZ-HfIdkLs"]YouTube- Naima Akef in a film نعيمة عاكÙ[/ame]
It's not necessary part of the regular movement vocabulary of Egyptian dance, but as I understand you, it's also an individual thing for Tulay Karaca and not a general thing with Turkish style.
Sometimes also I think can you get more gymnastic than Randa...

Re: Clips of Turkish Style dancers
My problem with Didem is I always think I see somebody doing breakdance or hiphop when she does the "broken" or rather accentuated circles, she usually loves "broken" bodywaves. She is graceful and flexible and pretty, but often treats the whole musical piece almost as preliminaries to the drum solo, like walking in as the topmodel, everybody cheering how good she looks again, swooshing her hair to both sides, doing some turns and some snake arms and then: tabla solo. A lot of moves also talented gogo-girls will like for being flashy... I totally miss the ability to express anything lyrical in her. I know she did different things also, but this seems a pattern, still. Of course she has amazing physical ability, and she is a captivating beauty, no doubt, but with a giant as Nesrin Topkapi, elegant, super-feminine, graceful and intuitive as a dancer only can be, I can't somehow understand the status Didem has in Turkey.

Re: Clips of Turkish Style dancers
I just noticed this thread and my video :)
wanted to mentioned that Jessaiah's Roman style is very nice, but the song that changed in the middle is not Roman, it is a sad song (with upbeat rythms) about a Civil War that took place in Canakkale and this song is about a girl went away from her home to get married, and she missed her home.
I would not dance Roman to this song. I know there is a folkloric style line dancing done often to this song, even using spoons.

Re: Clips of Turkish Style dancers
This is exactly why I don't care for her, I do tend to prefer more of the 80's style Turkish Oriental myselfbut often treats the whole musical piece almost as preliminaries to the drum solo, like walking in as the topmodel, everybody cheering how good she looks again, swooshing her hair to both sides, doing some turns and some snake arms and then: tabla solo
More videos please! This is great!
