It's not necessary part of the regular movement vocabulary of Egyptian dance, but as I understand you, it's also an individual thing for Tulay Karaca and not a general thing with Turkish style.
You're right Nouria, Naima (and Katie, another Egyptian dancer of the golden era who put a lot of BIG kicks in her dance) does put some pert kicks in there, maybe the director told her to Turkish it up?

We also should remember this works both ways, Turkey and Egypt have a long history of exchange, and Egyptian dancers have been slipping Turkish moves into their dance repertoire as well.

Now I'm going to shut my pie-hole 'cause this is supposed to be a video thread...and I've been yapping and not contributing videos!

I'd rather guess it would have been ballet influence. Naima had ballet training, she was also fab at spins. Randa also had ballet training and she likes to stick out her legs in a (athletic looking) developpé. I don't think that at that time there existed an awareness of Turkish vs. Egyptian style. Just musical and cultural differences. Egyptian style has been coined and exported by: films, Mahmoud Reda, now Raqia Hassan, Ahlan wa Sahlan, the www and the workshops. It spreads because it is recognizable. Turkish style has not been resumed in such an unmistakable, authoritative way.

I would not dance Roman to this song. I know there is a folkloric style line dancing done often to this song, even using spoons.
yeah, I don't know if the band just went into that and she went with it, or if she chose that song. I'm guessing the former.

The post of Reyan Tusuz rocked. It's not often we can see such authentic Turkish dancing.

OPS! Sorry guys! I was under the impression that everyone was looking to see the old school "cabaret costume" Turkish, a la Tulay and dancers before Tulay. Forgive me for not using proper terminology. I always get confused, and what I am not confused on I don't remember. I have a baby sucking brain cells from me! LOL!
I didn't want to clog with Rromany if that wasn't what everyone was wanting to see. But I shall happily repost.
I think the only other thing I had up as Tulay's neice. I though she was pretty awesome.

Probably not as the Turkish Oriental and Egyptian we are most familiar with currently, but the Ottoman empire was still very much a presence in Egypt right up until the end of WWI, and both the Egyptians and the Turks had distinct styles of dance that, due to the public nature of dance performance, and the performer transplantation that happens when you have an small invasive population that brings it's own entertainment, (entertainers often travel/follow military campaigns) there was probably some swapping of dance tips and tricks. I like this article

    history6d

because it describes some of the Turkish dance style that was prevalent in Turkey at that time, and indicates some of the stylistic dance traditions that may have been transferred between the two countries.
And I think the many clips we see right here on this thread would indicate the long film heritage Turkish Oriental dance has, and the arrival of Ozel Turkbas to the US is one of the primary reasons Middle Eastern dance is so prevalent here to day, not to mention the heavily Turkish influence in American Cabaret. Seems like Turkish has for sure left it's mark.

Obviously, I'm out of clips, but cannot stop talking. I was wondering, do any of you feel like posting Rachel George clips? I have always thought her dance style was Turkish Oriental, but I am not really all that familiar with her, and have only seen her perform a few times, always to Egyptian music but very Turkish Oriental style.

No, no! I loved the Romany clips. I think right now we are all struggling to define what is considerd Turkish Style Belly Dancing. There are some Turkish Belly Dancers, such as Prenses Banu, who while Turkish, embraced the Egyptian style of Belly Dance.

In this thread, I'm struggling to define and show examples of what IS Turkish style belly dance? What are it's roots? Where did it come from?

My point before was, that just because a youtube clip says it's a Turkish Belly Dancer, don't assume that the clip is representative of Turkish style belly dance.

I think this thread demonstrates that we are all confused!!!..c::

Okay, now that is about the 3rd or 4th clip I've come across of a Turkish dancer dancing the classic Egyptian Orientale musicale composed for Nagwa Fuad, Sit El Hosen. (Check out the thread about this song. )http://www.bhuz.com/forum/music-trad...anslation.html

I guess I'm confused as to why Turkish dancers in the last few decades prefer to dance to Egyptian/Arabic music versus traditional Turkish music?

Norma, I think I can ask my teacher, Nesrin herself, why she likes to use Egyptian/Arabic music rather than "authentic" Turkish music ... stay tuned.

Meanwhile, I want to learn more about traditonal Turkish music... maybe I had better have another thread on this.

That would be awesome to get Nesrin's perspective!

    OK, I am back!

    She mentioned two things :

    1. In late 70's and early 80's, Turkish TV had more "song" programs, and she didn't want to dance to songs as a "side dish" for a singer.
(If you see an old IBO show clips, you see Tanyeli and Asena did it for Ibo )

    2. At that time, isntrumental musics in Turkey were either too slow ( ottoman classic musics ) or too fast ( oyun havası/folk musics) with less or no rythm change... not easy to dance with her style ... and she found much more variety with Egyptian musics ... she said , "because it makes me dance"

She also said that if there were more variety in Turkish istrumental musics for oriental dance, she would have used them.

So, I guess, we should blame musicians for the cause of our confusion

Thanks. So, in all fairness, I don't think it's the musicians who are to blame but rather the style of music. She's saying Egyptian music is just more suited to oriental dance.

    For HER dance style, yes.
It may be true for other dancers in 80's ... I guess.

But I think we do have pretty good musics for roman/folk influended Turkish Oriental.

Thanks for the opportunity to think about it and look into it ... now I feel more comfortable to dance to Egyptian musics !!!

But I think that is a very important point and maybe something you should ask your teacher. Nesrin is considered to be one of the the most famous Turkish "style" dancers of the 20th century. I would be fascinated to know if she considers herself to be a "Turkish Style" dancer or an Egyptian "Raks Sharqi" Dancer? How would she define herself, in this age that is trying to pigeonhole styles and techniques?

I personally find her style to be what we in the US define as classic vintage oriental or American Caberet with a heavy Arabic influence.
