    That was interesting that was similar to the Roman Havasi clips but not as polished. I haven't seen her before. What would you call that style?

    Caveat: Prenses or Princess Banu is one the THE most famous Turkish Belly Dancers. However she was famous for her Egyptian style of Belly Dance. Most of the famous Turkish dancers DID dance Egyptian style.

    In this thread I'm trying to promote dancers who danced either the real Turkish style of dancing with Turkish music or/in the alternative dancing to Arabesque music in what we have come to call Vintage Orientale/ American Caberet, which had it's root in Turkish Belly Dancing.

    Most of the famous "Turkish Belly Dancers" today are dancing Egyptian style and that is not what this thread is about. I don't want to see clips of "Turkish" dancers dancing to Arabic music, Arabic Style. So to qualify for a clip on this thread you need to go "way back" or find a dancer who is perpetuating the tradition.

    Didem doesn't count. Unless she is doing traditional Turkish belly dance with Turkish music.

    I agree she does some great Egyptian style dance, but in these clips, with the big hip work and floorwork, the energy certainly looks and feels more Turkish Oriental to me, albeit, with less Romany influence.

    Valid point. So if a Turkish dancer is dancing to Egyptian music what are some stylistic differences that would make you say she is dancing turkish style vs. Egyptian?

    Veil work always look different even if the music is egyptian. I always attribute more belly work with the turkish style but i might just be watching the wrong clips...lol

    You know, I have been trying to figure this out for awhile, but it just feels different. egyptian and turkish dancers seem to interpret the music in different ways. i have been trying to find two clips with the same music, danced by an egyptian and then a turkish dancer. not sure that experiment would work though...

    Since I said this about Hale Sultan in another thread maybe I can answer, too.,r:;
    In Egyptian dancers I see a great core strength, all movements seem to come from within, from the outside they look more contained. Turkish dancers seem to use more the momentum, that looks fresh and energetic but at times less graceful (edgy, less fluid).
    Egyptian dancers transport a superemotional thing -"feeling joy and despair at the same time"- sort of feminity. I don't see that in Turkish dancers.

    A Turkish bellydancer said in a workshop we both attended, that it was in her culture to assume that if someone danced, it was out of joy. When you dance, it's because you're happy, when you're sad, you don't dance. She said that the emotional repertoire that was introduced through f.e. the songs of OK, it was not really familiar to Turkish people to dance this mixture of happiness, sadness, anxiety, despair...

    So it's about the musical repertoire again and the feelings it transports.

    I wish I didn't have to leave this discussion yesterday! Why oh why does my kid want to eat dinner EVERY night?
    Norma, that's one of the questions that I asked my Turkish teacher when I transitioned from an American Cabaret styled class to a Turkish one, and she told me the technical aspects, namely, larger hip movements, constant momentum, Turkish dancers are constantly moving, Egyptian dancers tend to take more of those "pause" moments, emphasis is on the up hip with Turkish, down hip with Egyptian. Turkish dancers may also include some Turkish Rom influence in their dance and overall Turkish is bigger, with more zill playing and floorwork. Turkish is more gymnastic, Tulay Karaca does some amazing high kicks and high knee lifts that I would never expect to see an Egyptian dancer do, and she does those incredible moves to Egyptian music and Turkish. No offense to Nouria, but I would not say that Turkish dance is less graceful than Egyptian; it takes a lot of grace, fluidity and control to be able to effect that type of high energy into your dance and have it look as strong and beautiful as these Turkish dancers do, without losing control of their dance. Every time I watch Turkish dancers I am amazed at that high energy level and power that is brought front and center to the performance. On a side note, I feel I should note I am speaking specifically about Turkish Oriental dance and not about Turkish Rom or any of the many folkloric dances of Turkey.

    Also, that clip of Ozel is the only one I have too, there used to be a lot online but they all disappeared, which makes me sad, she did some great dancing to Turkish music in the movies she made when she was in Turkey and she was HOT!!!

    Hi, sorry, it is not necessarily graceless but at times. I've seen Birgul Beray doing some moves and others I perceive as rough and rather not that beautiful for my perception. That might be temper and momentum or personal style or whatever.

    You have to know that what I say is an impression of videoclips, I have admitted not having witnessed any great Turkish dancers, so, I'm putting this totally up for discussion,r:;
