I've never danced on goblets - and I'm sure I never will due to the skis I call feet - but here's an article that you might enjoy:

I get mine at the thrift store. You can usually find something there in a set of 3 that's sturdy enough. Look for heavy pressed glass, make sure they are all the exact same height. I actually stand on them at the store if no one is looking :). Some people get theirs from Crate and Barrel I hear.
You can also practice on heavy tumblers or juice glasses from your home just to get the feel for it. Always start with shoes on till you know your glasses can take your weight! I worked in my converse sneakers, then dance shoes, then bare foot. Only broke 3 glasses, no injuries though. Just jump away from the glasses if you hear them breaking.
Good Luck!

Goblet dancing is a specialty of mine. I wrote an article about how to do it, the history of it, how to choose goblets, and has some photos and several links. It is here:

I've read about having your own surface to dance on (a board, or a tray, as zamora mentions - that sounds so cool!). do the goblet dancers here all do that? or do you dance on the surface given? provided it's not carpet or concrete or something?
also, if anybody has a link to a specific goblet from a restaurant supply place, i'd love to see it. i'd like to try goblet dancing, but images of impaling myself on a broken stem make me not trust myself to get the right glasses.

You don't have to bring your own surface, but if you are on carpet or something that isn't really smooth all you can do is get up on the glasses. You can't turn on them or slide them around with one foot as I describe in my article.
A tribal fusion dancer that I know recently told me she found brass goblets, but I don't know where she got them. But with those you wouldn't have to worry about your foot. You would probably have to do something to the bottom of the goblet to make it flat so you can stand on it. A metal rim wouldn't be very nice to your feet!

I had to make a surface for Shimmyfest this year, since we were dancing on low pile carpet. I used an old cutting board spray painted red to match the rug I put below that. I hated to have such a production, putting it all on stage before I got started, but the surface has to be even and solid and slidable, and I put the little rug underneath in case something broke...I could just see them vaccuming the stage after I shammedly skulked off...had a glass broken that is...
But nothing like that happened. Just like to be prepared. I have danced the same dance on polished concrete and that was nice, so smooth!
Best of luck!

i do not know how to post pics here, but on our site, we have several tray/glass dancers pics with faire photos.
the big brass trays we had on ebay.one got her set of glasses at target, the other, tuesday morning.just dont wash them.make sure they are in the origionl box.
at faire, i find my girl drinking in the crowd.i make her earn her drink, by dancing on the glasses.another brings out the tray, and the other 2 glasses (3 total) after she has turned, etc i ask the crowd if she has earned her wine.of course they say yes!
several times, i have had 3 that do this, i do the same with all 3, make them compete for their drink!
