    Stick dances (other than Saiidi)

    Hi, everyone!
I was reading Lauren's article about Saiidi and Tahtib and I was thinking about male stick dance in other countries, originated in weapon dances.

I guess this one is from Afghanistan, but I'm not sure:

    Chopbazi from Afghanistan:

    Iranian/Kurdish dance:

    From Punjab:

    Hawaii stick dance:

And, of course, the amazing "Pauliteiros de Miranda", from the north of Portugal, which dance comes from celtic tradition:

Who else wants to share or comment?

    Cheers,
    Ana

Here are some men from Abu Dhabi doing Raqs al Harbiya with sticks traditionally used to control camels. Variations of this and other "war dances" are done throughout the Gulf.

    There's English Morris dancing:

and the English even have people dressed up as dancing horses, as well; these hobby horses are just silly, but originally they were scary, with snapping teeth threatening the crowds:

Phillipino's also do a stick dance although they are larger and banged on the floor as the dancer step over and through them.

I was just in Cambodia and saw a wonderful folkloric performance. Yes, they have a stick dance too! Bigger though, more like small logs really, and they do a lot of banging on the floor and crossing sticks with each other - not in a martial-arts fashion but for rhythm. Very cool.

    Another one from the Emirates: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXU2GWERj24]YouTube - ‫اعمار - مي*د *مد - فزاع‬‎[/ame]

I like how it is a masculine interpretive dance but also joyful.
