    Beautiful Kuwaiti and Saudi Dances!

These two dances, Kuwaiti and Saudi, are part of a 4-hr. TV show commemorating the Kuwait National Day in 1989. I have it all on DVD, absolutely stunning! The entire show was conceived and choreographed by Prof. Dr. Hassan Khalil of ISOC, Cairo, during his 20-yr. tenure in Kuwait at the Institute of Dramatic Art. For this particular production, Prof. Khalil and assistant teachers from over 30 Kuwaiti schools trained ca. 1500 schoolchildren of all ages to represent dances from each Arab country.

In 2011 Prof. Khalil will come to North America for the first time to establish his intensive dancer and teacher training program here. Very exciting! We're working on the details now. You're welcome to email me if you'd like to be put on a priority list to receive more information as it becomes available:

    Wow Khalida-
thank you for adding the background info on these clips.
I love them and had them added to favorites-but no idea that it was Hassan Khalil´s choreos!

Give him my best regards for his work:)

Thank you, Emma-Bessa! I'm grateful to Sahra Saeeda who first posted this YouTube clip on Facebook today. When I clicked on it I recognized it immediately as Prof. Khalil gave me this Kuwaiti show DVD along with several others portraying his work in Egypt and the Gulf countries. They are all spectacular.

I'm so excited that he'll be regularly traveling to Ontario to teach his phenomenal dancer and teacher training program. I'll be posting more about it here on Bhuz when I have the webpage set up, all the details in place, etc.

I'll certainly pass along your kind regards to him, thank you Emma-Bessa :)

P.S. I (Veils of Isis) have just added a text comment to the above YouTube clip identifying Prof. Khalil as the creator and choreographer of this show.

I showed this clip to a Kuwaiti colleague who loved it and watched it over and over.
FYI the singer's very famous in Kuwait, his name is Shadi Al Khalij.

From YouTube: "This video has been removed due to terms of use violation."

What a shame! More info on this in the "The Rest - Belly Dance" thread:
"Best Youtube egyptian dance channels suspended"

I have the DVD of this entire show and I'll ask Prof. Khalil if it's permissible to put this and/or other clips from it as a private vid on my YouTube channel.

Re: Beautiful Kuwaiti and Saudi Dances!

    I have to ask about another detail from his *long* CV;
did he ever choreograph routines made for fawazeer programs?
    (Some dances by Sherihan)

Especially interesting for me because he is in a sense my "dance grandpa"-
his student from the Kawmiyya troupe Bahi Barakat introduced egyptian bellydance here in Sweden.

Bahi´s own troupe "The Nile Dancers"included many prominent dancers who later became teachers like Suzanne Petrén Abou Shebika(Zeina),Ann Larsson(Amina) and Ulrika Hellqvist.

They have taught a lot of us dancing now,and an interesting side effect is that most swedish bellydancers to this day have a harder time taking classes with Reda-style teachers than Kawmiyya:D

    (Dr.Hassan has previously visited Sweden)

I really enjoyed reading your post on the background of MED in Sweden and Prof. Khalil's influence there, Emma Bessa, thank you for sharing!

I will ask Prof. Khalil about any choreographies he created for fawazeer programs; should have an answer for you in a day or two :)

Khalida, I'd be really interested to hear about Dr. Khalil. He's been the mentor of a dancer that doesn't live far from where I live and he's there every year to teach. But, as I read, his specialty is dance-theatre...now how does that look like?

There is Oriental-Bedouin, Cleopatra-dance theatre and Tango Oriental on the menu.

Yes, Nouria, creating elaborate shows for the stage, i.e. dance theatre is one of Dr. Khalil's many areas of expertise. The two dances above, before they and countless others were removed from YouTube, were part of a four-hr. stage show in Kuwait. I have several DVDs of Prof. Khalil's theatre shows, parades, national sports festivities/stadium shows from Egypt, Germany, Belgium, Kuwait, Oman and other Gulf Countries as well.

A consummate artist, Dr. Khalil is devoted to the research and creation of dances in classical Oriental, Egyptian folklore, and from the Gulf countries. His classical and folkloric choreographies are beautiful reflections of the music and the story of the dance. His Oriental-Bedouin workshop focuses on Bedouin style dances and their relevance and influence on modern Oriental dance.

Dr. Khalil is also always searching for new and fresh interpretations and has created some delightfully imaginative fusion pieces such as Tango Oriental. His Cleopatra choreography is based on her story and set to the music of the same name by Mohammed abdel Wahab. I haven't learned this choreography but did read a letter to him sent by a student in Australia who took his workshop there. She wrote how she and the other students in Perth were so entranced by his choreography, and that they were able to really feel the music and the story of Cleopatra came alive for them.

When I last saw him we discussed his choreographic style and he showed me a few sequences from two new choreos he was creating at the time, one classical and one fusion. Absolutely brilliant, so much fun!

Prof. Khalil has been and is the beloved mentor of countless dancers around the world, from Naima Akef to Khaled Mahmoud, and more. It is truly an honour for me to assist him in his North American debut starting next February in Ontario, Canada. Oasis

I just remembered to ask Prof. Khalil about this today :) He says that he had always refused to work with this type of show as the routines were more like clips, without much thematic development.

With regards to the Fawazeer TV series, Prof. Khalil says that Sherihan, the lead dancer, had a strong background in ballet and was the principal choreographer for the show.

Here is a YouTube clip of Sherihan and other dancers in one of the Fawazeer programs -- enjoy!
