New Tamra-henna Video - shameless fan plug
Okay, I've been wanting this video to come out for a long time (it will be followed by another one on rhythms soon, I believe.)
As far as I'm concerned, it's an invaluable DVD for really learning about structure of music and how to work with rhythm. We all know I'm a T-h acolyte, so let's get that out of the way - no question there.
I'm ordering mine now.

Great! She'll be here in North Fla for a workshop next month and I hope she'll have some of her videos with her. I am really excited at working with T-H!

I was thrilled to see the publicity from IAMED just yesterday. I'm ordering mine today. I loved what I saw in the clip.
Why did I think Tamra Henna's DVD was going to be about Golden Era Egyptian style dance? I thought I'd read that somewhere.
Regards

I keep going back and forth between being REALLY excited to order it (I'm dying to get my hands on some good TH technique!) and thinking it might be too basic, since I'm pretty familiar with the most basic rhythms, combos for them, and how they fit into music. Unless there's some strong technique instruction in the movements she's teaching to the rhythms?
I keep telling myself it'd be worth it just for new ideas I can bring into the classroom, but again, I already do a lot of rhythm instruction.
Somebody review it, quick, tell me what's on it!!!

First of all good for you Lauren for teaching Rhythm to your students. Tamra-Henna is one of the few teachers here in LA that really delve into it. Secondly I can't wait to get this!!! What a great idea for a dvd!

I don't think it will be too basic because the movements she does (combos) with the rhythms are not basic at all IMO - they are complex.
But, I haven't seen the video yet.
Lauren, Carolynn helped with this and can advise - I am pretty sure she will tell you it is not too basic, so just shoot her an email.

it's a two volume set. diff rhythms on each DVD. i saw about 1/2 of vol one in almost final draft and i loved it. but i am utterly biased on two fronts:
i worship the ground T-h dances on and i love basics.
dunno if you will learn anything about the subject matter from it Lauren, but there may be some teaching ideas.
i continue to be impressed with T-h's ability to get across concepts. her beginning class is genuine beginners - 1/2 the people have never been closer to BD than watching I Dream of Jeannie - and at the start of class most of them were staring blankly when she was introducing the concept of Dum and tec - they couldn't have found the Dum with GPS. an hour later they were almost all moving right on the rhythm.
anyhow, i'm sure i'll use the DVD. but like said, i'm a sucker for basics and drills. right now i'm all about good clean solid foundation and let the frills worry about themselves.Last edited by carolynn; 09-21-2007 at 11:45 PM.

I watched it from beggining to end and I must say I love it. Tamra Henna has an endearing on screen personality, and it's a pleasure to watch her. She explains everything thoroughly and clearly. She teaches five rhythms on this DVD. They are Maqsoum, Beledi, Wahda, Malfoof and Ayoub.
The way she teaches them is to first explain in detail what the rhythm sounds like, i.e. how many doums and how many teks, then a written chart appears on the screen which shows in writing how the rhythm sounds. Then she teaches two different dance combinations for each rhythm. These are very detailed explanations and on some of the more tricky steps she actually explains the technique involved...on other more standard steps she doesn't. She shows each combination from the front and then from the back. After going over each combination several times, she does a final demonstration of it, accompanied by Amir Sofi on doumbek, and then continues on to the next combo.
While most of the steps aren't new (although I DID see 2 or 3 new *to me* steps) what I really liked was the way she put them together in combinations. She used familiar steps that I would never have thought of stringing together so the combinations always looked fresh and new even though many of the steps weren't.
She explains which beat should be accented with stronger moves, and demonstrates how they might be done in Egyptian style dance.
I definitely look forward to volume 2.
I did notice that on the back of the DVD case, among the rhythms that are listed they include Fellahi....however, I didn't see anything in the DVD at all that covered Fellahi rhythm. Maybe I missed it? I don't think so but I'll re-watch it tonight. ..g.:

It takes me forever to reply to posts it seems! And I really never seem to have the time to, but I remember I wanted to respond to this one in case my info can help others.
I have been researching Middle Eastern Dance rhythms and movement to them for some time, as I thought it would really help my dance development and would help my students. And as of late having a live drummer to assist me in class has renewed that pursuit. So it was great to hear about a new DVD focused on that and having known Tamra Henna for a while I know she really researches her material.
For many years now I have found that Hadia's Rhythm video was very useful. It is has her going through I think around ten rhythms with a drummer, explaining the rhythm, and then showing combinations or particular movements to the rhythms. The moves are not broken down, and she is speaking in French, but it is dubbed in English and her movement is very clear. It has given me ideas numerous times when I stuck for more material for a rhythm. And I believe it is on DVD now.

Also I recently got to have a quick look at another new DVD on the market about m.e.d. rhythms that was produced by Nesma of Spain. She produces really high quality music cds and dvds. She taught one afternoon for the M. Reda & F. Fahmy seminar I was at in Egypt this last June, and she was such a beautiful dancers and person. The DVD is called Rhythms of Oriental Dance and there is a review of it here:

Just some tidbits of info that may be useful if you are looking for more material :-). Also if you make it to Egypt, Nagwa Soultan in her teaching does cover combinations that go with rhythms...and usually accompanied by her son on tabla.
If any one knows of more sources, let me know ;-)
