Lauren, you've probably already seen this less authentic clip, but I love her fluidity. And yellow. :)

OMG, I just watched the first clip. What, exactly, is his "hip scarf" supposed to accentuate? LOL. Love the bicep action. He's hot!

Lauren I love that first clip you posted. I don't know why but men dancing like that is very sexy to me. I guess b/c it is so confindent looking.

I have two more of Reyhan. I like her. I wish there were alot more.

Wow, that guy (top clip from Michelle) is impressive too. I much prefer the coat tucked in the side for some reason!

This is probably a dumb question, but are they all pretty much dancing to the same song? Or do they just sound the same because of the basic rhythm?

They are defintely different songs but the 9/8 rhythm and instrumentation makes them sound very similar :)

I LOVE Turkish Rom and it's so great to see it done authentically and well!

Thanks SO much for posting these!

Alrighty then. :) So, in the instructional clip of Ahmet he's counting to five. Is that rhythm in 5? or is it a 7? or...a 9? Heh...those "odd" rhythms are mind-boggling to me!

It sounds like he's counting that way for the sake of teaching the choreography. The basic rhythm is still 9/8 which is ONE-two THREE-four FIVE-six SEVEN-EIGHT-nine (or ONE-two, ONE-two, ONE-two, ONE-TWO-three). With the numbers in all caps accented. It's easier just to count one, two, three, four-five.

Hope this helps! I agree...these "odd" rhythms are mind-boggling, but once they are broken down in an understandable way it becomes easier :) Try counting the above numbers and clapping on the numbers that are accented.

    Thank you Michelle,
i am happy to see more dancing by Reyhan , I only seen her clips from oryental star.

By the way since we are a few Turkish rom fans here , have you found good downloads on the net of this kind of songs.

I have a lot but i am getting bored with them just wondering what other Turkish rom music fans are listening too.

I have not had a chance to meet him yet but hopefully next time when I manage to go to Istanbul
I studied with Ahmed last year.
He is a very good instructor, he knows deep what the teach (we had a big conversation later about how Turkish Romani is mispresented in other countries and in Turkey also, and the most common traps a dancer fall into).
He build the movements one to one, and add things at legs, hands head etc.
Count he music, and clap it also.
His place in Istanbul is one of the most beautifull studio's i've visited.
From a very big busy road (why i forget the name, the road that have all the restaurants, the tram etc Itsli something) you ender a small door and go up to 6th floor where is Ahmed's and Hale Sultan studio.
Over all I feel that i need many more lessons with him.
If you are at Istanbul he is a must for Romani.

Thanks for straightening that out! The model looks like the same girl who models for Marta the Legend so I was assuming without checking first ,r:; Does Hale have a website?

It IS confusing (to me) when someone counts a 9-beat rhythm in fives.

Tayyar would count it all sorts of ways, hoping each of us would be able to latch onto a way that worked for us. Once i found my preference (one, three, five, seven, eight pause was my mantra, hitting the stressed beats and reminding myself not to dance over the ninth beat) I had to close my ears to the myriad other ways he counted it.

Actually she has working website at:http://www.halesultan.net/

And those costumes at Ahmet´s website are presented by Hale but I don´t know if they are "by her" as they look like Legend costumes - she was working before closely to Legend Costumes (not Marta the Legend) and is still featured in most of their costume photos but they stopped co-operation already some time ago and what Hale told me when we met (last week) is that she is now looking for some new costumer to work with but she waits to see some designs first.

BTW I just noticed that link I gave to Ahmet´s homepage is not necessarily working so here is another one: http://www.dansciahmet.com/eng.asp

    Turkish Gyspy Dance

    Hi Dear Ladies,

First of all, Thank you very much for your good opinions for me and the Roman Dance.
Maybe it seems diffucult the rhythm of the Roman Dance, but it is very easy to dance after you feel the music. And also, one more property of the Roman Dance is, dancing with your feelings. Unfortunately, you can not learn the Roman Dance in a short time. But, it will be the dance of your life after you learn that. Roman Dance includes, "the love", "the sadness" and"the enjoyment" in it.

Karsilama dance has 9/8 rhtyhm but it is very different from the Roman Dance. (Karsilama Dance is not a Roman Dance)
Somebody still listens "rampi rampi" as a Roman music, but is a very old song. There are lots of more modern and very nice songs other than "rampi rampi".

I have a chance to study with MariaAya, she knows lots of things about the dance, and she is dancing because she loves, i'm very happy to study with her.

    I wish you a happy dances :)

Note: I can not speak very well English my assistant helps me for that.

Ahmet, I am really glad you said this!!! I can´t stand "rampi rampi" and it annoys me so much that each of those very few times someone somewhere is teaching so called "Turkish style" whether it was fantasy gypsy, vintage am cab influenced style or even the "real thing" they always use this song and often even some versions that just sound plain wrong (like that version on CD "BD for fortune and fame)

BTW Ahmet, I will send you some e-mail about Roman style - Hale perhaps mentioned that I have some questions for you...

In defense of Rompi: No matter how often one hears that song butchered, it CAN be played in very exciting ways, including with the lagging-feel Romani-style drumming. I have it as Bursa Roman on a CD from Tulumba (with uncredited musicians, sadly) - holy smokes! Also, I get goosebumps from what Kadir Ürün & Deli Selim do to that tune on the CD Dumbaba.
