Thread: Help me name myself!

Okay, I know this is a totally trivial thread in light of other things being discussed, but I'm trying to decide on a dance name, and I've been asking my friends (non dancers) which they think, and they can't decide, either. So I'm bringing my indecisiveness to Bhuz in hopes some of you will help me choose which dance name to adopt of the 7 I've narrowed it down to. I decided to keep my real name first and add a a second arabic name, so here they are with their meanings, if known:

Summer Sahar (dawn)
Summer Lina (tender)
Summer Hana (happiness)
Summer Nadia (beginning, first)
Summer Amina
Summer Azar (fire)
Summer Sahla (soft, flowing)

Care to post input anyone? I'd very much appreciate it.....Thanks Bhuzzers!

I like the first one because of the alliteration, it sounds nice.

I like the first and last ones! they sound best. The last one especially nice, since you do fire dancing as well!

Summer Sahar is my favorite - the two names sounds great together.

I totally appreciate your opinions, ladies! One question: I originally had Summer Sahara on my list, but my friends thought it sounded like a porn star name. I liked it, but not if it's too....uh....."porny." Is it? :-)

I like the first and last, and also Summer Nadia (if pronounced NaDEEa). Summer Sahar sounds more exotic to me than Sahara, for some reason.

Summer Sahar rolls off of the tongue the easiest of all the names you posted and it sounds pretty.

these are my two fav.s
they have good cadence, they follow the "hollywood" name / syllable rules and they will be easiest for most people to say

think about how your name will sound when drawn out by an mc for a show.

Put me down as another vote for Summer Sahar. It's pretty and rolls off the tongue easy. Summer Sahara sounds like a perfume or something - stick with Sahar.

you're making me think tho. i'm getting a website soon and i guess Summer alone will be hard to search for. I don't know. I'll just keep Summer and later when people say oh are you Summer Sahar- i'll say no that's my sister in dance and she's fabulous. I'm just plain ole Summer.

See this is exactly why I want to change my name ever-so-slightly! I tried googling "summer" and "belly dance" and got everyone's summer belly dance festivals, blogs about how they took a belly dance class this summer, etc. I thought about using my last name, but it doesn't sound right, too choppy. I didn't want to throw out my name all together because it's too hard for me to identify with a name that's not really mine. So I figured "I need me a second name!" I went through a dozen arabic baby name websites with the names' meanings. Some meanings were hilarious, like "one who sticks her head in the sand like ostrich" or "cow with big eyes." ..l;,
Summer....I highly recommend a full-or-partial dance name for common names (or words) like ours. It's a lot easier if you start now, because if you keep performing under the name you have now, it'll be harder to change it later and still have people remember/know who you are. It's confusing to change one's name mid-career!

i liked summer sahar and summer azar
they both roll off the tongue easily and will be easy to pronounce.. i can't always put the accent in my name so at shows, it's come out amar-RITA, amar-sha, marita..... it's ah-mar-TEE-ah sigh....

true. i'm still thinking about it. maybe i'll use summer azar if you don't, but then we'll rhyme. i don't know. i'll start making a list too.

I like Summer Azar. Summer Sahar is a little too alliterative for my taste -- I generally LIKE alleration but Summer and Sahar just *sound* too similar. Summer Azar still has alliteration (the z in Azar echos the s in Summer) but the two names are distinctly two different words.

P.S. I'm glad you're keeping Summer --- when I first read the thread title I thought "... but you're Summer... how can you think of changing that??" :-)

I vote for "Summer Azar". If it has to be with Summer....

Or a mixture of Azar and Sahar: Azahara.... but then without Summer

Hey everyone! I'd really like to thank all of you for posting your opinion. It REALLY helped! I oscillated between the two most voted for names all week. It was really hard to choose! But I'm going with.....

Summer Sahar

Yay! I loved what "Azar" meant, but in the end, I just kept coming back to "Sahar." I like the way it sounds. I'm super stoked to have a dance name finally!

PS Just yesterday was thinking about you and this thread: I performed at one ME restaurant and the waitress asked me my name, and then immediately started speak spanish... well, I'm used to it already that they all think that Maria is nothing more but latin american name. But then the DJ came and asked my name. I told him. Then he said:"no, how should I announce you?" I repeated "Maria".
