I thought maybe we'll make a thread on shaabi clips? Not to evaluate, just watching a lot helps a lot on what is understood as shaabi or what would be Egyptian shaabi.

Of course Fifi is the real Queen of Shaabi!! no doubt about that ..g.:

It doesnt look like she is doing much but this style is a LOT harder than it looks. For most of the time she is doing something nicknamed the 'Shaabi shuffle' (by me ) If she is doing the foot movement with the toe and heel tap movement then this is not easy to do or teach. It took me a good while to pull this one off and I have never seen any Western dancers do it this way. I was taught by a club owner called 'Tuna'.

I taught this move to a group from the US in Cairo last week and then at JOY festival..it is notoriously hard but made to look extremely easy and relaxed.

PS with regards to the other clips, the woman in the black Saidi dress is potentially good but does the usual tricks in this clip which of course distracts from her real ability.
The 'cool mum' is what I would these days call 'classic beledi'.

I cant see what Fifi is doing with her feet and if she is including the toe and heel pattern but the overall move looks like what she is doing at 2.35 - about 2.41

PS I have not seen the old man clip for some time.. how fab is he!

I can't see what Fifi is doing there clearly either. Are you sure one of the guys isn't doing that same move in the Big Jump clip, though? I'm looking at the guy toward the back with the orange hat and the lanyard around his neck, right after he bends forward, starting at 0:32-ish. That stepping he does is one of my teacher's default filler moves, and I thought that was what you were talking about. I should have been clearer when I posted the video.

Do you have a video example of someone doing it where you can see the feet? Now I'm really curious which move you're talking about.

Yeah. Me to. I'm trying to picture this in my mine. I took a class once from Leila Haddad and we did this move where we were constantly tapping our feet, but it was heel-to-toe, not toe-to-heel.

the tap is with the heel then the foot is placed as the hip goes backwards.

I am not good at explaining moves in writing or understanding that way either.

I have seen it alot in the club environment.

Why is Fifi always hitting her head? It reminds me of old people who can't hear you and want to fix their hearing device...!?

From what I can see of Fifi, I can replicate the movement by doing a marching step toe-heel, but I can't get anything remotely similar tapping the heel first - it feels totally wonky.

When I was about to learn some Fifi steps from Samasem;
I thought "well it can´t be so hard,she has a limited vocabulary,right?"

WRONG.

I was soaked in sweat and was working very hard to make it look easy and nonchalante!(didn´t succeed either I tell ya)

I have never seen this dancer in 'real life' but I do like this clip as it is a perfect example of what i was saying about the beledi/shaabi cross over.

the music is beledi and she responds to it as beledi... but, if you changed the music to shaabi, the feel and look would not change at all... she has the beledi look with a little dollop of 'Shaabi attitude' if you like.

This dancer (who is not Egyptian) has definately been watching nightclub dancers.. that or she is telepathic because her style is not typical 'oriental baladi' with 'pointed toes and polish' like you generally find with Western dancers.

I suppose I feel grateful that I now understand what a good exponent of "Shaabi" is doing. The next stage is be able to do it.
