    Differentiating dance styles

I've been hard at work lately on *finally* getting enough of these style articles together to be useful to a serious student.

What I'm building is the resource I *wish* I'd had as a student.

So far, I have Egyptian Raqs Sharqi and Baladi, and just moments ago finished Turkish Oriental. I also have Saidi/Assaya and Khaleegy under folkloric styles.

More to come, and I hope to make it prettier, too -- but here it is for those who are interested.

You made a great thing to get an overview over the styles!
Good you keep it short, too. A lot of people, especially beginners, zone out as soon as there's too much text.

    Re: Differentiating dance styles

You guys are making my day. I put the same link on my students yahoo group and crickets chirp. It's just more than they want, I understand. But I'm so happy to have people to share it with!

When I was just a young whippersnapper, with fusionista teachers who mostly didn't know anything about styles, I would read about these things on Bhuz. And the only way to catch a glimpse of each style was to spend $60 on a ratty VHS tape, usually of a single dancer, not an overview of the style.

It took years and a lot of $$$ for me to get any sense of Raqs Sharqi vs. baladi and how either one might be different from what I was seeing locally. And no Turkish videos were available to me at all!

Now, you can spend an afternoon cruising youtube clips for free and get familiar with famous dancers in a whole genre. I think it's AMAZING!!
