- You're working with Mahmoud Reda's Andalusian material and looking to insert some appropriate flair
- You love Samia Gamal's performance to the song "Sigarah wa Kass" and would like to create your own Andalusian-inspired piece
- You do American Tribal Style of belly dance and like to use flamenco-based posture, hand floreos, etc.
- You already study flamenco and would like to polish up your technique under the guidance of a master instructor
- You love the Latin flair in the dancing of Amaya, Dalia Carella, and others, and would like to bring some of that into your own dancing
- Friday, November 9, 6:00 pm: Lecture by Mariano on history of Spanish dance. Will include the link between flamenco and North African dance, the role of the Gypsy trail, the influence of Spanish dance on ballet and modern dance, etc.
- Friday, November 9, 7:30 pm: Introductory lessons in Latin dance (salsa, etc.) taught by local Iowa City instructors
- Friday, November 9, 8:00 pm: Dance party. Will include some dance performances (including out-of-town belly dancers who come to town for the Parra event), plus an opportunity to get up and try the Latin dance moves taught earlier for yourself in a salsa nightclub environment.
- Saturday, November 10, 10:00-Noon and 1:30-3:30: Workshop with Mariano.
- Saturday, November 10, 8:00 pm: Dance concert featuring not only belly dance but also some Latin dance.
- Sunday, November 11: 11:00-12:30 and 1:00-2:30: Day 2 of the workshop, this one a master class.
Workshop: Add Andalusian flair to your belly dancing with "Essence of Flamenco"
Would you like to learn some flamenco fundamentals from a flamenco instructor who has also worked with Tamalyn Dallal, Elena Lentini, Nourhan Sharif, Dalia Carella, and others?
We're having a workshop event called "The Essence of Flamenco" taught by Mariano Parra in Iowa City the weekend of November 10-11. No prior flamenco experience required.
The workshop is designed for dancers who don't have prior flamenco training, but would like an introduction to the posture, the attitude, and some of the moves to incorporate into their personal styles. We expect the workshop to be attended by people who study Latin dance (tango, salsa, etc.) as well as belly dancers and flamenco dancers. For example, this workshop would be helpful if:

Just FYI....Mariano Parra is GREAT! I took a workshop with him years ago at the University of Alabama before I knew anything about flamenco. He's very knowledgeable and a very thorough teacher. You'll definitely learn something new with him!

I have heard wonderful things about Mariano over the years from my buddy Dalia Carella. Hope the workshop is a big success!

We got a grant to fund a FREE Friday evening panel discussion, 6-7 pm, on Spanish Dance Through the Centuries. We'll show video footage of Spanish dance clips (flamenco, Gypsy folk dance, others), and then have the panel of scholars talk about what they depict.
