I'll probably get shot down for saying this, but I think sometimes we forget what's important in our dance. Here's Part 1 of a performance by Egyptian dancer Lucy in her prime: no physical-jerks, no locks, pops, cartwheels, splits etc etc, just dance, beautiful, elegant dance...sigh....

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
Agree! At first I thought they were lizard wings from some sort of sci-fi theme but I finally realised they're supposed to be seashells.

I love Lucy. Very elegant subtle dancer. And she always dances to very beautiful complex music.

Aziza........I won't pull the trigger and shoot you down!!! I LOVE Lucy! Poppin and lockin is good and has it's place. Sometimes I feel it's overkill and wonder where the "dance" part went.....Thanks for the clip!
Norma.......what video is the lime green Lucy on?

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
Aziza, do you have a year on that first performance? Based on the clothes and the hairstyle, I'd guess it was pretty old.
Gotta love that costume, though. It manages to look both futuristic and crazy-dated at the same time. Still, get rid of the shoulder fins and the man-eating leg vines, and folks would be fighting over it on the swap meet boards...

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
I have that performance on a VHS tape that I acquired either in the very late 90's or early 2000. So most of the performances based on costume and hairstyle would be late 80's and early to mid 90's. Late 90's at the latest.
I'm very grateful for this clip. I'm in a walking competition where I have to do 10,000 steps a day. I typically do close to 30,000 a day except on the weekends. Sunday is my stuidy day. At 5 p.m. I barely had 2000 steps. I did a short walk but was still missing 3000. I danced to Lucy's clip and easily got my 10,000.
My god! Where can we buy music like that????? It's made for belly dancing.

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
I adore Lucy, if I was in Egypt, I'd be her stalker, seriously. I have managed to amass a nice little collection of videos and clips of her, I watch them constantly for inspiration; that first clip up is from a saute wa soora dvd, it's a great collection if you can get your hands on it. During the first show at the beginning of the the DVD she does an awesome saiidi number, and Taheya Karioca is in the audience! Lucy stops by her table and chats with her, and does this little "dance like Taheya" bit that's adorable!

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
Yeah, that moment where she does the Taheya dance bit is ruined a little because the camera guy gets all distracted suddenly and starts bouncing around and shifts off Lucy for a bit and then shifts back to her (super irritating!) Taheya is the one in the black sparkly out fit, she has glasses on.

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
Here's another interesting (and useless ..l;,) bit of trivia to look for while you're watching that video: During the duet Lucy does, when she's in that yellow leopard print dress/costume, right near the beginning before the actual duet part with the male singer begins, Lucy loses one of her earrings down the front of her costume! She doesn't even miss a beat, and she pantomimes losing the earring for him on the sly. She eventually removes the hook piece that is left in her ear as well. Nothing fazes her during a performance, I love it!

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
Would you say that Lucy has a common dance thread with Naima Akef? I love them both.

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
I like Naima Akef too, she's stunning! For myself, I always thought that Lucy had more in common dance-wise with Taheya Karica, I feel they both have a similar way of keeping time with the music that is awe inspiring.

Love her !!!!
Unfortunately its difficult to find her performing at Parissiana nowdays, (after February actually) but earlier as Athens is 1 hour flight from Cairo we did the crazy thing with last min tickets and arriving 1 am at Cairo straight to Parissianna to watch her !!!
OMG her dance to Lissa Faker... I've cryed so many times standing at the left place of the audience just watching her...
Just amazing

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
Her style is soooo classic, graceful, WOW in person; I feel blessed to have attended her entire weekend of workshops in Dallas a couple of years back. It was the first time she taught in US and she ran around the room of about 125 workshop attendees checking everyone - she is still in prime condition and did two long shows that Saturday night - one Oriental and one with cane. If she comes back, I'd be there in a nanosecond. ..g.:

Here is my favorite video clip of Lucy, every time I dance to this song, it reminds me of this clip, and I think I dance better for it!

Re: Egyptian dancer Lucy
I always think of the backup dancers as vintage Egyptian cinema stage dressing, you're not really supposed to pay attention to them; I think it's more of a nod to the classic piece of music she's using, a reminder of the way many golden era dancers had dancers in the background of the "dance operas" they performed in the old black & white Egyptian movies.
