Re: Lebanese Cane and Saidi Raks Assaya
I can't pull up the clips just now (slow connnection) but I have been wondering for a while what distinguishes Lebanese cane dance from Saidi Raks Assaya- where did it come from? how is the movement vocabulary different? Can't wait to get to a computer with better internet speed!

Re: Lebanese Cane and Saidi Raks Assaya
I'm not sure where it came from exactly, but the first dancer I saw dance to cane to debke music was Howaida Hachem. My teacher, who was Syrian really liked her because she danced with a lot of energy.
I remember arguing with my band to play me debke music for cane. They thought I was crazy and said, "no you need Saidi!" LOL. Now it is common place to hear a band play debke for cane.
This is one of 2 clips that inspired me.

Re: Lebanese Cane and Saidi Raks Assaya
canes also get used for the men's baladi style, tet. i don't know much about it beyond what was on Ranya's baladi DVD, but you can see her perform a men's baladi taxim with a cane on it.
also curious about the stylistic differences between saiidi asaya and debke-cane. i remember a thread about the differences between Lebanese and Egyptian style in general ("Lebanese is NOT a cross between Turkish and Egyptian!") but nothing about this

Here's another clip of Hawaida Hachem. This is the first time I saw cane work done this way:

Re: Lebanese Cane and Saidi Raks Assaya
I just realized my videos have a horrible buzz sound when they converted. Dont know why.
I found Carovan's posting of the green bedlah video:
