Thread: DEVDAS!!

I rented the movie from netflix a month ago and haven't had three hours in a row to watch it..watched the entire movie last night and LOVED it. I have never seen any American made love story come anywhere close to this movie, it was sooo beautiful.

Any recommendations for more?

Not in the love story vein as much but I love Om Shanti Om and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

I 've devdas and OM shanti Om with Shuru Khan, did you watched the old version or the new one?
Here an experet on bollywood, have you seen Zara and vera also Fanna and my favorite of all times Asoka, I seen it hundres of times i think.

It's more of a cute romantic comedy but I REALLY liked Acha Lagti Ho. Probably am spelling that wrong. It has Aisharwa Rai in it, who I love. She was also in Devdas.

There is also a film about the guy who built the Taj Mahal, can't remember the name, but I have it in my netflix queue.

I also love all the americanized bollywood movies - Bollywood/Hollywood, - also the one based on a Jane Eyre story.

the ending of devdas made me cryyyyy lol...
i dont watch bollywood movies anymore, but some of my older favorites were kuch kuch hota hai and dil to pagal hai

If you like the drama, Veer-Zara with SRK is very good. My personal favorites are Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Rab ne Bana Di Jodi, which are more lighthearted.

Honestly, Devdas is among my least favorite Bollywood movies. The songs and dancing are amazing but SRK's character is such a jerk that I just can't understand how those ladies could be so torn up over him!

"Devdas" is one of my most favorite movies EVER. It's so visually stunning. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and "Saawariya" are good as well.

The SRK/Rai version of Devdas is sumptuous and worth investing in just for the visuals and the quality of the supporting cast...but I found it problematic as a remake of the novel.

If you like SRK then Veer-Zar, Om Shanti Om and a lot of his earlier stuff ( Duplicate) are good. I liked Don: The Chase Begins Again because I think he's really good at playing baddie roles and again, visually stunning.

Ohhh, Veer-Zaara is the BEST! The music is so awesome. I think its a Yash Chopra film and his work is amazing in its richness and filming plus there is generally some good acting in them as well! Check it out. Veer-Zaara Sharu Khan and Preiti Zita (?)

Man, this movie has been in my Netflix and Blockbuster que for over 4 years noe! They recently re released it on dvd.. FINALLY!!

Also look up movies by the actresses who dance:
Madhuri Dixit, Rehka, Aishwara Rai etc.
BTW- am I the only one who is thinking: This is a Bollywood thread, doesn't it belong under something other than "belly dance styles and traditions?" lol. Not that I know where it WOULD belong. But, ya know; different dance styles, different continent etc.

You know, I didn't really like Devdas at first either, but I tried to understand the story 'thru his eyes' and I understand there are cultural differences amongst men. I think he acted like an ass at times..when he threw the cards? at Paro, and he was rough with her physically a few times.

But as for his behavior I think he was just immature..both of their moms kinda screwed up their relationship. That one little ***** with the horrible laugh, boy I wanted to punch her..she really instigated a lot huh? Yeah..I blame it on the moms. :)

He wasn't very nice to the courtesan ...but she knew going in that his heart was with Paro.

I love the already mentioned so I will add a different one. U Me Aur Hum. Laughed and cried.

i LOVE when they have subtitles, especially for the song lyrics..wow american love songs just don't do it for me anymore after learning the interpretations of these songs :)

I second Veer-Zaara. My first bollywood movie was 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' with SRK and Kajol. Love it!

Like with all subtitles they get the message across but are not always exactly accurate.

I also recommend "Kisna" and "Lagaan"- both epics, like Devdas. Also "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" by the same director as Devdas.

Dil Se for the song on top of the moving train! Sad story too.
