    Wine-goblet dance?

Hi bhuzzers! Long time, no post.

This weekend I saw a dance show in which one performer, who was identified in her intro as dancing in a "cabaret" style, carried three wine glasses out onto the dance floor, placed them mouth-down on the floor, and proceeded to dance on top of them (one foot on two glasses, the other on one). It looked cool and impressed the audience, but I will admit that I was somewhat mystified. I've been a fan of bd for a really long time now, and I've never seen that before. Has anyone else? I kept trying to figure out if it was a traditional Middle Eastern thing, a vintage American nightclub thing, or just something she made up for the piece. Also, is it particularly difficult to do, or does it only look flashy? I would think that dancing on glasses would be technically demanding in that you'd have to have a lot of control over your weight placement, but I'm sure not going to try it for myself to find out! I'd love to hear if anyone else has seen or done this dance before.

Welcome back, Asimatiyat! I've been wondering where you'd disappeared to. ..g.:

I'm fascinated with goblet dancing, too, but I haven't worked up the courage to try it out yet. I've read all the tips on what to look for when choosing goblets, but I'd feel better if someone who performs this type of dance regularly could tell me which particular ones they bought so that I know they're a safe choice. (Anyone?)

There have been a couple of recent discussions about goblet dancing on the forum. Here are links to the threads:

    Wine Glasses

Hopefully, though, someone more knowledgeable than me will jump in to offer their insight!

It does seem to be a tradition within the dance. Here are a couple of recent threads:

Wow, I had no idea that anyone would notice I was gone! :) I didn't mean to quit posting, I've just been busy lately.

Thanks for the links! I can't wait to get home tonight and check out the videos.

EDIT: Dunyah's article is awesome. I cracked up when she mentioned the dancer having a live parrot on her shoulder -- just goes to show that no matter what crazy things one of us comes up with, chances are it's already been done. :D

    Water tumblers

Go to my profile, click on the "view more pics" under my avatar and the second photo should be of Charmaine, a popular Chicagoland dancer in the 70s/80s, dancing on water tumblers.

I recently got some new wine glasses so that I can dance on them, but I think I got them to big, or to tall. Because when ever I try to turn its very hard and they offten fall over. I had little short ones that worked fine but i want to get taller one to add more WOW to my dance but it seem like the tall one are hard to trun on. Anyone eles had this issue?

I haven't ever tried it, Toria, but I think the problem might be that taller glasses just aren't as sturdy as shorter ones, because the stems are long and thin, so your weight distributes differently.

I used to have a pair of chunky deep goblets with short stems and sturdy bases. I bet they would have been brilliant, if I hadn't broken them like I do with all my really nice glassware...
