Belly Dance to Dabke Music - Post Clips of Yourself & Others

I was actually thinking I'd love to see more of how belly dancers approach the Nawari rhythm in performance, then I saw the belly dancing to dabke thread and thought, well, it is on more than just my mind.

Please post clips of yourself and others belly dancing to Dabke music. I'd love to see different people's approaches to this rhythm and style of dance.

Re: Belly Dance to Dabke Music - Post Clips of Yourself & Others

A while ago, I posted a request for videos of women dancing as part of larger debke choreographies (as opposed to men doing fantastic physical feats when it's their turn to bust a move), but nobody had any clips of quite what I was looking for. (The thread is here http://www.bhuz.com/forum/belly-danc...ke-videos.html.) It doesn't seem like there is a lot on the subject. If women are dancing theatrically to this music, they are usually either doing actual debke or cane, not "belly dance."

There are videos like this one of Roxxanne--it's a solo, and it has some moves you could poach for a more orientale styling. Otherwise, all I know of is informal stuff, like the second clip where one part of the crowd has a line going and there are a few girls in another area freestyling it.

I'm using the term "belly dancing" loosely.

I'm happy to see cane clips. In fact I would absolutely love to see cane clips.

I'll check out that other thread too, thank you.

Norma will probably be better at recommending clips for that than I am. More like the first song here?

Howaida makes it look so easy. (Love the sleeves, wouldn't have objected to an underskirt, though...)

Howaida is probably the best example I can think of.

Same song, different dancer. Ya ein Moulaytein is really Lebanese depke although it is often confused with Egyptian Saidi.

Samara Tawfik did some great Lebanese debke songs:

Re: Belly Dance to Dabke Music - Post Clips of Yourself & Others

I did a belly dance/dabke piece for the Belly Dancer of the Year pageant. The judges really appreciated it...probably because it's something that I really enjoy doing on and off stage. In fact, seeing Mark's clip made me get up and do a little dabke in my living room just now LOL.

Anyhow, I would upload that video except the DVD is trapped in my grandma's DVD player and she can't figure it out. So really I have nothing to add! ;)

Thanks for sharing everyone! Tabitha, hopefully it will get untrapped someday. :-) You may just have to record another one.

Hi Shems. I was at the LVBDI and Karen Barbee did a great piece fusing dabke with bellydance. I could not find any videos on youtube but I will keep an eye and send you a link when I find one.

If you get a chance to study Dabke with Roxxanne, ladies, do it!!! I have struggled with the basic footwork of the dance for years, and taken classes several times with good teachers, all to no avail! Roxxanne was the first to actually get me to feel the flow and soul of the dance.

OH, and Mark, that Iraqi dance that's similar to dabke, with that particular rhythm you were dancing to, I believe it's called "chobi."

Some debke can be so lively- I think one has to be careful to not end up looking like you're doing aerobics... I really love assaya to saidi- and I do it sometimes. It's fun!

It's exciting to see you on the schedule at the Nationals, Roxxanne! Lotus will testify that I was bouncing up and down about this last time we met. :)

If you taught additional workshops anywhere in the area, I'd be there in a heartbeat, and I know I'm not the only one.

I believe "chobi" is the name of the line dance but is also used to describe the rhythm. After asking an Iraqi friend, the actual name is Muthalath. It's also used in Levantine dabke where it's called Muthalath el Iraqi to denote is Iraqi origin.

Here's a nice demonstration of Iraqi rhythms on youtube. The last one is Mathalath 8/8.

I have to say for me bellydance or canedance to dabke music is simply odd. I have always experienced dabke as a real folcloric dance which people do at parties, improvising. At least that's what I saw and participated in in Syria or Lebanon. If it is completely normal to do bellydance or canedance to dabke music, I'm glad to learn sth new.

    I like this clip

Oooh thanks for posting that clip, I've been trying to find that for a while! Youtube has a tonne of Filistini dabke clips that are good as well.

I've never been fond of raqs sharqi being used with dabke music. I think its a great opportunity during a show (stage or otherwise) to get the audience up and teach them a dance that they can all do together and have fun! :)
