Re: Nadia Gamal
LOVE her!! And this is driving me crazy -- what's the name of the song that kicks in around 1:28 ? I know I have it, but can't access the name.

Re: Nadia Gamal
Wowee!!!
The song is called Nadia, the Sultans recorded it on one of their albums, and I just danced to it recently!

Re: Nadia Gamal
The Sultans may have recorded it and called Nadia, but the original recording played in this movie is off an album called Music for an Oriental Dance (Danses de Nadia Gamal) by Rafic Hobeika, Voices of Lebanon, Produced by Robert Khayatte & Co in 1973 (this info and track names from a copy I have of the orginal LP cover). The song at 1:28 is from near the end of the track called "Nado" and what comes after is from the track "Sahar".
It is awesome music, and it is always nice to find another bit of Nadia. She was so beautiful!
edited to add:
this is the album: Music For An Oriental Dance- Danses De Nadia Gamal - Volume I * Vinyl Lp - Nado Amal - Sahar Joumana: LP - GEMM.com
edited to add again: You know, on second thought, I'm not 100% sure that the bootleg copy of this that I have has the track names correct. I know Joumana is Joumana, but there are 3 more tracks called Sahar, Amal, and Nado, and they are in a different order on my cd than listed on the album cover.Last edited by ssipes; 09-27-2010 at 08:42 PM.

Re: Nadia Gamal
Thanks, ssipes, I did know that the Sultans' version was not the version in this clip, theirs is extended with a mizmar taxim and has a more Turkish feel.
I love the version in the clip, though, so thanks for posting the link.

Re: Nadia Gamal
Sedonia nailed it. That's the album. I have the original vinyl and the track names are right, Sahar, Joumana, Nado and Amal. It sounds like there are parts from a couple of different tracks cut for this movie clip though, I think I heard parts of both Sahar and Amal.
<3
I love this album and I love Nadia's dancing.

Re: Nadia Gamal
I'm not sure about the order of the track names though. The music at 1:28 in the video clip is towards the end of the track called "nado" on my cd that was ripped from an lp -- but I didn't rip it nor do I have the lp so...
And why does this conversation about the track names on this album sound strangely familiar???,r:;

Re: Nadia Gamal
I sure with that album would show up on CD. I wore my vinyl out ages ago. I have "Joumana" but not the other three.

Re: Nadia Gamal
It was awesome. All four pieces were incredible. It was some of the music that truly formed the dance for me, so full of energy, dynamics, changes in rhythm and emotion - very difficult and challenging.
The Lebanese Civil War really had a negative impact - not only on Beirut and the people of Lebanon obviously but also on the dance/music - I think there would be more music of that level of excellence but the war broke out.
This had some unexpected consequences - example, Beirut had been probably the prime location for recording studios, artists and supporting musicians in the Middle East but it became too dangerous. So people went to Cairo and the studios there got overbooked - my friend and kanoun player had intended to make an album in Beirut but had to go to Cairo instead and because of the war he was rushed and couldn't do his best work.
When war erupts it screws up absolutely everything.

That was an awesome clip, it makes me want to go practice! I actually have that album on CD, and the order/names of the tracks are incorrect on my copy, as well.

Re: Nadia Gamal
That Lebanese civil war. Sigh. I actually had the chance to go and dance in Lebanon and Egypt, immediately after the war ended. I was willing to go, but my parents were so freaked out that I'd be killed, I turned down the opportunity. I always kind of regretted that. For my dance career, it would have been an amazing opportunity. However, years later, I talked to the dancer who took my place. She was about 5 years younger than me. She said she was virtually kept a prisoner for her own safety. She wasn't allowed to leave her hotel room except to go to the club to dance.
