Any serious tabla players in the house?

Im one Im one! I just started out, tho. Hey, are there any all female ME bands out there? It seems so rare to see a woman on the stage unless she is dancing or singing.

Ha, we need a little tabla smilie that does Carmines Rak star ending.

I certainly wouldn't call us a band -- but my troupe's drum circle has 4 hard-and-fast-can-always-count-on-'em members: 1 man, 3 women. Of those 3 women, two of us are also dancers, so we tend to do the hat trick: this piece I'm a dancer, that piece I'm a drummer. ..c:: It can get tricky! We have a couple of other men and 3-4 other women (again, the women are all dancers as well) who join us on zills or tambourines or as just basic rhythm drum players at different times.

Jennifer James-Long, who used to own Bhuz, is/was a serious drummer (she played on the several-year-old Aziza CD and throughout the Middle East).

Seems to me there's a female group of musicians in the southwest that I ran across lately, but I can't recall their information at the moment.

Hey, I'm a woman and I've been drumming for many years. ..g.: You can see me drumming in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VADWE7yIico

This clip features a performance by tribal fusion group Luminessah and a very charming raqs sharqi performance by a 5-year old dancer. I'm drumming and wearing an Egyptian dress and red head scarf.

Inanna, Sisters in Rhythm is an all-female percussion group out of Portland, ME that have been together nearly 20 years. They lean more toward West African & Brazilian rhythms, with a Middle Eastern touch, but it's all very danceable. In fact, you can't attend one of their shows & NOT dance.

How about Susu Pampanin and the Cairo Cats? Remember Mary Ellen Donald?

I think it's probably hard for a woman to be accepted in the male dominated professional Egyptian musician scene, no matter how good she is.

I used to belong to an amateur ME drum band many yonks ago. I enjoyed it for a while, then my drum broke and I didn't get back into it. I wouldn't mind trying my hand (no pun intended) at it again some day, though.

    Great drumming, Dunyah!
