Are we talking about in performance? What Shira said.

Are we talking about as a general activity thing? (I haven't seen the ad) Lots of people use hooping for toning abs and obliques, improving hip flexibility and isolation. Seems as legitimate as any of the other slightly odd-seeming cross-training activities we might try.

It's up to the vendors how they want to spend their advertising dollars! I, for one, am happy that they do, because that means bhuz can continue to be available to me as a free resource.

'zactly- and advertising isn't necessarily about fitting in with the general conversation either. I know several belly dancers who dabble in other genres as well, and 'circus tricks' (their words, might as well use 'em) including hooping seem to be popular. I think it looks fun, so yeah, this could well be a good place to advertise.

Oh! I have no problem with folks advertising on Bhuz, it's just that Bhuz was where I happened to notice the ad, that's all.

Actually, my initial post was almost rhetorical in nature and was at least partly fueled by my "I've had it up to here" frustration level that had absolutely nothing to do with dance at all, rather with hospitalists and hospitals ejecting a patient two days after amputation surgery, without any advance warning, at 10:00pm on Christmas Eve.

Then, when I saw the hooping ad skip by on Bhuz, I just about wanted to scream to the heavens, "Why, oh why, can't we just belly dance??? Why do we think we need to *improve* it with stuff that has nothing to do with it???"

    So that's my story.

. . . who thinks hooping is probably a great way to get some extra work for those middle muscles, but who can't get a hoop to stay up around her middle for anything!

Me too! I've always been hopeless at it.

And I'm sorry that you'd had such a horrible day.

I can answer that...having been a belly dancer for over 30 years, I got into "hoopnotica" hoola hoop dancing with the weighted hoops a few years ago. Most women couldn't get it for sometime, but being a belly dancer with my famous hips, my ami's had me mastering the hoola hoop in a very short time..and then I would do different belly dance movements to manipulate the hoop where I wanted to go..along with the grace of belly dance, I have now mastered this art form! I have already performed belly dance routines in this "genre". If you consider all the other fusions weaved into belly dance, hula hoop shouldn't be too difficult to imagine. It's beautiful, extremely healthy for the body & a blast...talk about losing inches quickly!
If you would like to see more of this art at work, check out www.hoopnotica.com
I hope you like it! Ajaa
