I'm trying to find the movie or video clip where Samia is dancing to souq al abid. I'm pretty sure it was her dancing it, anyway, if anyone can point me to which movie this song appears in I'd really appreciate it!!

Re: Samia Gamal
Is that the one where she is dancing on top of a Giant Drum wearing this:

I can't find the clip on youtube right now, but when I hear the song, this is the imagery that comes up in my head. I don't remember what movie it is from.
Never-mind...found this clip - it isn't the one...Last edited by shems; 01-31-2011 at 02:55 PM.

Re: Samia Gamal
Thanks for checking Shems, I was thinking it was in Afrita Hanem, but I watched it last night, and didn't see the scene, so hopefully someone can chime in and point me in the right direction!!

Re: Samia Gamal
If I'm translating correctly and the poster is right, the "karnac 05/10/2008, 13h02" quote here http://www.sama3y.net/forum/archive/...php/t-264.html claims that the song comes from the movie "Amir al-Antiqam," AKA "The Count of Monte Cristo." So far, the only belly dance clip I've found from this movie is the one below.
Here's the Arabic if anyone else wants to try digging for a clip.
"Samia Gamal" ساميه جمال
"Souk al Abid" سوق العبيد
"film" فيلم
"Amir al-Antiqam" أمير الانتقام
"Farid al-Atrash" فريد الاطرش (It doesn't look like Farid is actually in the movie, but he's listed as the soundtrack composer on the elcinema page http://www.elcinema.com/work/wk1003165/details_all.)
Sorry, that's all I've got...

Isn't that the "Belly Dancer goes to Hell" clip? I don't recall that it was Samia Gamal, but I remember a scene where a dancer descends a staircase into a stage dressed like "hell," complete with demonic backup dancers and flames. It was awesome.

Re: Samia Gamal
I didn't come across any "descending into hell" scene, but that doesn't mean there isn't one in "Amir al-Antiqam," or that this is even the right movie to be looking for. There are a few more online clips of dialog scenes, but this was the only other musical number I found on YouTube, and it's not Samia.

Bahaia remembers it as Naima Akef in the clip I described. But the song is definitely Souk Elabid.

Re: Samia Gamal
I tried searching for Naima Akef (نعيمه عاكف) plus the song title, and I'm not finding anything useful. Just on the basis of search results, I'm thinking it looks more likely that it's Samia.

Re: Samia Gamal
You might be thinking of the "Sultan al Djinn" dance sequence that appears in the movie Afrita Hanem. In the context of the movie's plot, Farid al-Atrache's character has created an operetta about the Sultan of the Djinns, and Samia's character is the lead dancer in the production.
Since "djinn" can also mean "demon", the dance sequence indeed features a dancer descending into a hell-like environment.
This clip also appears on the Legends of Belly Dance DVD.

Re: Samia Gamal
Nothing coming back on Hind (هند رستم) or Camelia (I couldn't find a definitive spelling for her name, so I tried a couple of possibilities). I did get some hits for Hekmet Fahmy (حكمت فهمى) with the title, but the most that came of that was finding another page about Samia and the song (http://www.cinematechhaddad.com/Nujo...oom_SJamal.HTM). In addition, I went back and just searched on "souq al-abid raqs film" with no dancer's name and that pointed me to Samia's Arabic Wikipedia page, two obituaries for her, and a bunch of links that didn't appear to be useful for advancing the hunt.

Re: Samia Gamal
Aradia,
I think this is Souq al 3bd.
The movie is "Don't Tell Anyone" from 1952. This is actually just a portion of the dance scene here; the whole thing is also included on the "Legends of Bellydance" DVD.

Re: Samia Gamal
This blog entry on Afrita Hanem includes stills from the "hell" scene, though the plot summary is a different from Shira's description above. Does it look like the one you're thinking of?

Re: Samia Gamal
Shira, that song is Raksat Kahramana where she is the Genie and dances for Farid and puts him to sleep. The clip Nisa posted is the song I'm looking for, although it's an odd version, they almost don't sound the same, the track I have is the one Suhaila used in her video, "Dances for the Sultan" which is much more dramatic and theatrical, but at least I got to see someone perform to it!! Thanks ladies for doing so much searching!!

Re: Samia Gamal
My comments actually weren't intended to reply to your original question.... they were an off-topic digression! (Sorry for muddying the water.) I was replying to the person who asked about the "belly dancer in hell" sequence. The scene in Afrita Hanem I was referring to wasn't the Kahramana scene, but rather a later scene that was a scene from a big production number in an operetta-within-the-movie, and it comes later in the movie.

Re: Samia Gamal
The entire film Afrita Hanem is on YouTube. Hurry if you want to watch it because it disappear for copyright infringement. It is not subtitled. The Hell scene doesn't have any flames, so maybe there is a hell scene in another in another Egyptian movie that you're thinking of, Tamrahennatx. If so, I'd like to see it.
Afrita Hanem - YouTube
Netflix has it. I don't know if it's subtitled, though.

Re: Samia Gamal
The composition "Souq Al Abied" is a farid El Atrash work. It was presented in the motion picture "Lahn El Hobb" as a dance number that might be what you're looking for. Samia Gamal was not a memebr of the cast for "Lahn El Hobb" and the dancer you see in the clip here ‫ is Layla Al Jaza'eriya. The dance starts approx. three munutes into the clip.
Does this help in any whay?Last edited by Alexandrian; 09-18-2011 at 12:16 AM.

Thank you Alexandrian!!! Yes, that's the clip I've been looking for!! I googled the song, nothing, and my boss and I were going through tons of B&W movie clips trying to find it! I wish Samia had danced to this song, would have loved to seen her!

Re: Samia Gamal
I think this is the clip from the movie based on the Count of Monte Cristo one of the earlier posters mentioned. It starts with Samia Gamal and includes several other short dance sequences from the same film.
Naima Akef also does a bellydancer-goes-to-hell sequence in 'Baladi wa Khiffah'. I've got it on hard disc but haven't put it on YT as the quality isn't great. I'll try to get it up tonight so you can have a look at it, it shows what a talented (and flexible) gymnast she was.
