A brilliant video clip of a debke style 'flashmob' at Beirut's Rafic Hariri airport.


(There's also a terrific clip that's been around a few years of a similar dancing mob at a US train station.)

I'm trying to imagine something like that happening in the US, and all I can picture is chaos erupting when the music starts. "That's the Call to Prayer! Terrorists are going to blow up the airport!"

I think the thing that impressed me the most in this is just the sheer ability and sense of rhythm. People who have dance culturally-ingrained as a thing you do to celebrate...it shows in the ease with which people get into it, even the ones who clearly weren't in on the flashmob and just joined in. Sadly, you'd see a lot less were it at a US airport, because among a lot of "mainstream" white Americans, spontaneous, social dance just isn't something they do.

and that is downright SAD I'm teaching my 3 boys that dancing just cuz you love to dance is the way to go! ;)
