No, no, no - I am not into the ancient roots of bellydance in Indian temples or any that. Instead, here is an example that makes me wonder whether bad American bellydance may have had an impact on dance in India, more specifically, low-budget Bhojpuri productions.

Not every clumsy dancer in the world shaking a tailfeather and flapping their arms around has been influenced by the belly dance community. Maybe this is simply what bad Indian dance looks like?

But, all kidding aside, I was struck by how much the bad Bhojpuri dancing reminded me of bad American belly dancing. And, it did make me wonder whether and, if so, how American culture and taste have influenced these videos.

There are a lot of such videos out there, they are commercial products and produced at a dazzling rate for VCDs. From what I learned last weekend, these performances are a the prevalent way of music production and consumption in NE India.

these girls are doing a dance muqabla (battle)...so they are having a dance off basically. it's dumb. and they just can't dance cuz they are just random girls on a show.
