Surprised by an enjoyable fusion piece
Participated in a local fundraiser show last month and an acquaintance performed an improvised belly dance to "Boogie Shoes." You know the song, right: "I wanna put on...my boogie shoes! And boogie with you!"
I have to admit that I haven't often seen a belly dance piece to Western music that I've enjoyed. Maybe never, actually.
But this worked. The music was cute in a good way. And the playfulness of the music & lyrics just seemed to work somehow.
Now I am harboring a secret desire to choreograph a solo to "Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance)." I see shimmies....
Have I lost my mind? Am I about to be excoriated by the PC Dance Police? Or will I be having to much fun to care?
Anybody else have examples of a non-ME / fusion piece that they were pleasantly surprised by?Last edited by Jungleflowers; 04-22-2011 at 08:52 AM.

Re: Surprised by an enjoyable fusion piece
Every dance piece in the Fantasy series (Mystery, Desire, and Magic) blew me away, and I was told some are fusion but I don't know what kind.
Then another time when I first bought Ariellah's Bellydance and Yoga Conditioning DVD, I popped it in and went to a random part to see if it worked, and she was dancing very short choreographies to the song 30,000 Feet. It was detailed, emotional, moving, and so AMAZING that I became very curious to see bellydance done to any kind of music (forgive my ignorance though, I don't know if it's still considered "bellydance" if the music isn't ME, even if the moves are the same).
As for losing your mind? If it clicked with you, why not enjoy it? My favorite songs come from all sorts of music styles from all over the world. If I hear a song I like, I imagine choreographing it with bellydance steps. If you think doing a dance to "Do You Love Me" is embarrassing, you don't want to hear my ideas. ;)

Re: Surprised by an enjoyable fusion piece
It a great song, and I think it would be apropriate for a hafla with other bellydance enthusiasts!(listening to Brian Poole&The Tremeloes right now)
Donīt forget to pay homage to the authentic performers of the style though
