This clip was filmed at the Sha'abi festival in the Delta and is an Egyptian dance troupe (although not all of the members will be Egyptian of course)

A case of Four Loko and YouTube?

Seriously, you can't stop the dance from evolving, and dancers are some of the most notorious "idea borrowers" in the fine arts. (Did you ever notice how much of Michael Jackson's "genius" looked a lot like Bob Fosse's "Snake in the Grass"?) I'm surprised the guys in that clip didn't throw a little breakdancing into their choreography to round out the contemporary motif.

Otherwise, coming soon to a hafla near you...Sha'abi with Isis Wings! It's authentic!

That was fun. High-energy and so great to see the men dancing, that is something we see never around here. I want one of those dresses! So cute, and yet so modest.

Did you notice some kind of glitch in the sound when they were using the Isis wings? It was almost as if the wings were creating a huge wind!

A little influence from BDSS perhaps?

That's right, no Arabic, Turkish, or Armenian men around (a few at the Arab Student Union at the University) to dance at gatherings or on stage.

I thought Adam Basma retired, glad to hear he is still doing shows.

    Oops, back to topic!

David, I was thinking the same for next year. The festival is advertised on Egyptian TV and are organised locally for local people.

I too thought of BDSS and Tourbeau.. yes, with internet and so many dancers at festivals in Egypt things are going to be very inter-connected dance wise.

I dont know about other clips.. not sure what to look for. This clip was named after the song 'wink'. I just know the Sha'abi festival clip was in Mahalla recently as I have friends who live there.

Hehethis troup is performing mostly for gulf tourists in an amusement center called "Dream Park"!
(Hence the very covered costumes, and super fast moves i.e. slower becomes more sensual)

I´m *so* fond of their director Ibrahim El Suezi Osman(he used to be a Reda Troup dancer,Kamelia was a dancer in his troup)

He´s an absolute darling;generous, honest and a dream to work with.

Here a what he calls simple but fast intermediate pop simsimiya (in male style),it´s a very big plus to have trained some Reda or for Raqia Hassan when attending his classes,so the footwork and floor patterns already are there(when in Sweden he were concerned, and stayed many hours and taught Reda basics for free when he saw that some students were unfamiliar with the format)

Here´s one of his choreos with our school troupe(got the costumes from his wife who makes quality costumes in a small scale)

Same with his troupe at Dreampark:

If you want to design your own dress,or have a model you like I can put you in contact with his wife,I´ve been very happy with her:)

Yes,but the wild flapping and high energy bopping with the wings are non-BDSS I guess

Can you see where Kamelia started her wild&crazy tempo?

Ah, that makes sense.. lol I thought they maybe a hotel troupe from the Red Sea. The Sha'abi festival is usually alot of Folkloric with the tourist troupes thrown into the mix.

I´m *so* fond of their director Ibrahim El Suezi Osman(he used to be a Reda Troup dancer,Kamelia was a dancer in his troup)

    Is this his own troupe?

many of the dancers in the tourist areas work under a woman called Violetta (who is actually French), she is one of the big agents for dancers in resorts.

Thanks for the info Emma...it kind of confirmed my idea that a choreographer who works with the Western dance scene had a strong hand in this 'spectacle' lol.

A BIG PS, Mohammed the guy who sent me the clip has now informed me that this was the troupe at the Sha'abi festival, but it was not filmed there.. it must have been done at Dream Park..it looks the same as in the other clip.

Ah well.. it sort alters the whole perspective again now.

    Yes,it´s his.Oooh Violetta,yes I know!

Indeed it puts another perspective and also because 1.it has to be fast ´cause solo dance or "grounded",heavy, slow is deemed too sensual for family afternoon/early evening familys tourists etc
(This was the explanation I got when I asked about the frantic tempo&about dresses covering the female dancers almost from earlobes to toes.Late shows they had galabeya dresses sometimes.)

The three most popular acts in Dream Park were the hiphop&street dancer groups ...and the beatboxers!Go figure:)

Always come home tired of dramatic veil entrees, drum solos&the whole orientale shebang after an "ordinary" bellydance event-would love evenings of whole troups dancing instead!
(+extra points if I don´t have to dress up for dinner)

I wonder how much it would cost to have a dress like that made. I'm just a humble hobbyist dancer so my budget is small. But I'm curious. I really do like the dress.

I´ll mail and ask for a quote, never hurts to ask;the dresses are made in flashy fabric with some appliques rather than extensively beaded+I´m sure it becomes less work intensive to make one that´s meant to wear own bra underneath?

How interesting! I have never had much to do with the folklore or troupe side of life in Egypt, so thanks for the insight. Is this sort of thing a general rule or this particular guys take on it?

(This was the explanation I got when I asked about the frantic tempo&about dresses covering the female dancers almost from earlobes to toes.Late shows they had galabeya dresses sometimes.)
The clothes I can totally see why.. the frantic tempo is a new one for me.

Yes of course, Deam Park is a theme park..Egyptians are not really wanting Egyptian themes on days out.
They actually look more like Wally World from national Lampoons vacation. I have been twice in my life taking the kids but not watched shows.

I have seen some of the Alf Leyla stuff in Sharm and most of it was dreadful.. they are trying to Disney-fi everything and it just becomes a caracature of itself.
