yousry sharif-inspired dancers?
can anybody tell me about any particularly fabulous dancers that studied with or are heavily influenced by yousry sharif? we're hosting yousry here in seattle next october, and we need to bring in some dancers to perform in the show, as he's retired from performing (wah!).
thanks in advance! :)

Definitely a second on Virginia. I love watching her dance!
Can anyone confirm whether Shanna from Little Rock also happens to be one of the Yousry trained/influenced dancers. It seems to me that she is, but my memory retrieval system seems to be sub-par these days...l;,

Amar did indeed study with Yousry, as did Kaeshi of Belly Queen. Azza Amon is amazing!! LaUra also studied with Yousry, I believe, as did Hannah Nour.

In the DC area, I believe that Saphira of Saffron Dance in Arlington, VA has worked with Yousry a lot. And she's terrific! Strong, precise technique and musical expression, with personality to burn. She's a great teacher, too.

Virgina's great but my teacher, Ranya, is one of Yousry's protoge's in NYC (along with Azza Amon) and is amazing. She'll be coming out with 2 instructional DVDs from World Dance New York this spring as well. She can be seen on just about every one of the gala videos. These are clips from 2 performance DVDs that I filmed/edited for her::

I am one of Yousry's regular students so I just want to throw in my 2 cents here. So many dancers mentioned are fabulous but I just want to speak up for my fellow New Yorkers. Yousry's home is in NYC, so besides weeklongs, when Yousry is in NY he teaches 4 to 5 classes weekly. And before he started doing workshops around the world he did this every week for many, many years. Some of these dancers include Ranya www.ranya.net, Azza Amon www.azzabellydance.com, Nina Amar, and Amar Gamal. Amar did attend last years weeklong and other weeklongs in the past. The new generation of Yousry inspired dancers are Zaina www.zainadance.com, Nicole www.nicoleraqs.com and Yowalka (Yogi here on Bhuz).
I wish I could be so dedicated and take every workshop and every class! Unfortunately, I just found out, that starting in January, he won't be teaching weekly anymore due the closing of the famous Fazil's Dance studio (where holds his weekly classes).

I second Ranya and Azza from NYC. Zaina is great too but I hear she is out of the country for a while. I have not seen Nicole or Yogi perform but they seem ok in class. Also Nicole and Jaida (Yousry student's) teach beginner classes for Nourhan and they are on his site under "classes". I would also recommend Jaida Welcome to Jaidadance.com :: Home and I have seen her perform many times.

That's right, Zeina is here with me.
It has been great to talk with her after four years. Since I saw her last time before she left to USA. She has been too busy in NYC.

Fazil's is closing because of the gentrification of Hell's Kitchen. The building it's in was bought by a real estate developer and will be turned into another fancy high-rise. I have heard that they have until December. ..cr.:

Hi Elisa,
I haven't seen the other dancers being mentioned live and in person, but I have taken a workshop with Ranya and have seen her perform live. She is great! She is very juicy and a real pro. She did a great Saidi piece at IBCC. Also, I saw her at Haft Vadi's Bewitching Bellydance Ball and she was did spectacular creative pieces. She is a very different from what I remember of west coast style, so it might be interesting to have her.

Re: yousry sharif-inspired dancers?
For those of you who are Yousry Sharif's fans, students or proteges, I am happy to bring him to San Diego. I was lucky enough to have studied with him for 4 years in NYC before he started travelling the world. Yousry will be in San Diego May 22 & 23, 2010. Visit SaharDance Home for more information. And let me know if you're coming :)
