Seriously, do you know what Shwikar is wearing on her head for the melaya costume? Is that a mandil with silk flowers instead of pompoms? A plain scarf with some sort of headband/crown on top of it?

The fellahi wear the colorful pompoms called 'ooya', but the ones worn with mandeel for melaya leff is called 'mashghoul' which is just a name for little flowers made from material.

The fairouz clip is cute but I love the comedy in the first clip.

Well there goes another stereotype, he fondles a shoe! was that deliberately meant to be shocking or are we all wrong when we say Middle Easterners consider shoes to be filthy and insulting.

I'm confused. You're saying the pompoms are for fellahi dances, and the flowers are for melaya leff, so wearing the scarf with the pompom edging for an Iskandariya tableau would be wrong? There are teachers in the US propagating the idea that the pompom scarf is the proper headwear for melaya leff. I can't see the detail on the Reda fellahi videos from the other thread to see what the trim band is made of, but the length of the scarf seems to indicate that they're much longer than the little, triangular scarves, where the ends are wrapped around to form a decorative headband. BTW, I don't suppose you have the Arabic spellings for "ooya" and "mashghoul"? Either my spelling guesses are wrong, or the dictionary doesn't recognize the variations I tried as MSA.

Part of the reason I linked the Fairuz clip is I'm curious if there was a connection between the two movies--as in, Egypt went through a phase where it was a standard shtick to plow through a series of ethnic stereotypes in musical numbers. After digging around on elcinema, it appears that these two movies were separated by nearly a decade or so. I still don't know which movie the Fairuz clip came from, but she only made movies from 1950-1959, and the clip here looks like it is from the 1968 film "Moutarada gharamiya" (مطاردة غرامية "Romantic Chase"), not "Matar-al hob." (elcinema has a listing for the 1970 play/drama "Matar al-hob" that neither Fouad nor Shwikar are in, two films, 1963's "Thaman al-hob" and 1960's "Nahr al-hob," that Fouad are in without her, and the 1998 series "E'mra'a Min Zaman al-Hob" that Shwikar is in without him.) Adventures in hunting for the words مطار الحب on elcinema aside, here's a still from "Moutarada gharamiya" that points to the idea that this is the right movie. That has to be the same set--too many details match.

Update: jessedan has clarified that the Fairuz clip is from the 1951 movie "Fairuz hanem." That makes 17 years in between the two clips.
