Kamala is wonderful! This clip is from the 70's, but Kamala is of course still dancing, teaching, coaching and choreographing here in Los Angeles. She teaches at DanceGarden LA and in Alhambra, and is the producer of the upcoming show A Choreographer's Collective (which I'm honored to be participating in as well). :)

If this is the same dancer bellydance certainly keeps us young!

Yep, that's her! she and Sahra used to dance together! if you get Sahra's Ra: Journey of the Sun, Kamala is in the snake suit during the trip to the underworld!

Yes, I remember this style of laid back, unchoreographed dancing. To me this is the essence of belly dancing. I could see all kinds of influences in her style - from Bobby Farah to Randa. Great fun to watch. Thanks for sharing. I had never heard of her before, being on the east coast.

This is what I had in mind also for bellydance when didnt knew for style's etc. And this is how started also.
The first bellydancer saw live was Rhea of Greece (from Bal Anat troupe !!) and I was mesmerized !!!!

I think belly dance is as close as you can get to the fountain of youth. I don't look my age either, particularly when I tell people I'm a grandmother (sort of). I pray I never have to stop because of illness or infirmity.

Thanks so much for posting this. I'm still a baby belly but I've totally fallen in love with the old-school american cabaret style! I'm so glad more clips are becoming available on youtube. What a great dancer!

I saw Kamala friday night at Roxxannes event - Layla al Sharq. I told her about this thread and she was absolutely tickled! She has also posted more footage including a set from Farida's graduation party with Kamala, Sahra and Roxxanne performing one of Farida's choreographies! Tres cool!

And she promises more to come!

Thank you Tahira for telling me about this website. To discover that my peers are mentioning me is the best honor a dancer could desire! I have been one of those "work-horse" dancers slogging through the years in the clubs & restaurants, & was hoping that all these videos would tell a story of one dancer's journey.
