I am dancing to Kermal Oyuonak this weekend, so natuarally I have gone on to YouTube to find as many variations as possible. Only 34 views for this dancer, but she is the best. And she seems to be Russian with a very non Russian take on this popular song. Actually...she seems to be Latina.

Yes, she is great and those hands are expressive. I recently saw a beautiful latin inspired costume on here....I wonder who got that one? wink-wink. Knock em dead.

Only one day...sold it to a dancer it would fit! Boobs were too big for it...but we digress. Anyone know anything about her. I watched her other clips, and she is good...but this song, her interpretation just stirs me.

Re: Wow..just wow...
I really like her musical interpretation.. but, am I the only one who's worried about her posture? Seems like she's dancing with a very tilted pelvis...
I wondered if it was just the costume exaggerating the appearance of a deeply arched lower back, but when I look at her other clips, it's even more apparent. Here she is side by side with a dancer who has a neutral pelvis.
It may be a valid stylistic choice regionally, I don't know... but it hurts my back just watching her, and I wonder how much her lower back hurts after a show, and whether she might have a short career because of the damage being done?

Well..there is that, but I am still so blown away by her interpretation. Most other clips of dancers dancing to this song are so...rough, overly wrought and way too dramatic.

Re: Wow..just wow...
Not to hijack...but is the song also part of this song -Yearning? I notice the same thing in terms of overly dramatic, or perhaps it turns to melodramatic in most people's dances. The song demands drama, but it's hard to pull off successfully. I liked this particular version, especially as you could see the practice and then the actual performance.

No..they are 2 different songs - if that was your question. They do have some commonality. I also have a small metal statue in my studio that says "drama queen" ;-) After all..what is dance without passion? Aerobics.

Re: Wow..just wow...
Honestly I doubt her lower back hurts her. She certainly isn't dancing like she is in pain. Some women (and men) have a greater arch in their lower back naturally. My family is from Jamaica originally and many of the women there have a pretty dramatic arch in their lower backs (the women in my family included). No one complains of back pain. For many people, it depends on their natural anatomy. What is uncomfortable or detrimental for some isn't necessarily so for everyone. Just a thought!
I didn't love her interpretation. But she is a lovely little dancer. I prefer Dariya Mitskevich's. To each their own though. That is one of my favourite things about this dance, the various takes on the same song. There is something for everyone.

Re: Wow..just wow...
I have a lot of people assume that when I am actually in Neutral, I have my lower back arched because I naturally have a curve to my lower back/butt region. It isn't until I then purposely arch it and drop my pelvis down and forward that you see that it really was in neutral. I also have a lot of people assume my dancing causes me back pain. I have no lower back pain. I only get pain in my upper back when I make the mistake of attempting to sew or cut fabric all day:( lol

Re: Wow..just wow...
Actually coming from another person with a deep lower back arch, it looks to me like the arch on the girl in the original post is more than I would recommend. She may not be in pain, but her movements look stiffled and unfinished, and I think part of the reason is because her "default" posture is not allowing for full range of motion.
My neutral might look to some people like "released" but I know when it is and when it isn't (and sometimes I do accidentally release it, for example during spins) because when I'm at neutral I know that I can "tuck" more if I want to, and release more if I want to. Someone else might look at me and think I need to be more "tucked" to be at neutral, but if I tuck more I won't have full range of motion. Same thing if I release more.
I can't know for sure if that's the case for this dancer, since I'm not in her body, but from having this issue myself, this is the impression I get.Last edited by yameyameyame; 10-27-2011 at 04:50 PM.

Re: Wow..just wow...
Actually after watching that again, I take the above post back. I still don't know whether or not she is in what would be "neutral" for her, but her movements don't look stifled and she is finishing them. I'm not sure what I got that impression from the first time. Part of the reason her arch looks so extreme might also have to do with her short torso.
I thought the interpretation was beautiful and very unique. It was very balletic and she has gorgeous lines. I just wasn't too fond of the excessive body touching.

Re: Wow..just wow...
Odd..but usually don't like body touching either. When I first saw this video, I thought I was looking at a child. As she began to dance I revised that impression, but she has such an innocence about her, that the touching just didn't read the same way that it would have with another dancer. She has a very Tahia quality in the clip.

Re: Wow..just wow...
A lot of new dancers blame their bad posture on a sway back, but they just don't have the muscle tone to hold their pelvis correctly. Once they understand, it is like q big light bulb goes off in their head.
I had one upper level dancer in my class who refused to acknowledge that her posture was bad. I know it wasn't her back because she can make a very deep tuck. She is now teaching...I hope she doesn't hurt anyone.

Re: Wow..just wow...
I have had this happen to me so many times I have stopped counting. Worse, these "professional" dancers get quite indignant when I point out they might have a posture issue. They come to class hopefully to learn something - but when you give individual feedback they don't want to hear it. But the ones who do listen and build their muscles have all corrected severe sway back. This is a pet peeve of mine because when I was little I did gymnastics and learned to stand in a perpetual arch. It was a long battle to correct it - but I did. I have footage of myself when I first started to dance that is horrifying ...

Re: Wow..just wow...
Neat clip!!
I find it funny you mistook her for a child because of her purity- I missed that entirely- I got very coy and a bit of a cute coycette misfit from that. With the whole tugging of the shoulder ruffle down and the body touching. It was a bit sensuous I thought.
But I liked the clip and enjoyed her dancing.
I have a big butt- and I know I have gotten worse about keeping my pelvis in neutral-which means I have essentially the same noted problem but I notice one thing that really lends to that appearance is the fact she has that little roll on her back just below the bra line under her arms to the side. I have that too- and I think that really contributes to the "un tucked" look because it seems that an overarched back + untucked will result in that little roll of skin (I shudder to say fat because I know neither I nor her give the appearance of being "fat" at all but yet there is what it appears to be!).
just a thought- but for those of us who have big butts- there is only so much neutral spin we can acheive- its probably more than that (its an easy habit to slip back into) but there is a point of well you still have a sway- but you are much LESS swayed than you were. (I currently do not fall into that category- I fall into the- I'm lazy out of class and forget to train those muscles properly consistently!)

*writes a bunch of stuff about neutral pelvis, big butts, etc*
*deletes it*
Maybe we should spin that topic off? Anala wanted to talk about this dancer's musical interpretation and I don't want to derail her thread!

Re: Wow..just wow...
as a side note- I looked Wael up on itunes... and the CD that this is on- they have two songs completely mis-labelled! I don't want to buy the CD because I want all the music labelled properly and I am afraid the rest of the songs are wrong too- I am less than pleased.

A rose is a rose,yes?
I mistook her for a child because of her body proportions. My first thought was how could someone have put a 13 year old in that scarlet costume! But..then I was watching it on my itouch at the time. Everybody is small on that screen. ;-)

Beautiful song, lovely dancer & dance...I really enjoyed her movement, her relaxed demeanor and lack of rushing or overdone drama -- she JUST DANCED and was total control the whole time. She clearly has a background in ballet & gymnastics which may explain the exaggerated arch in her back.

My computer won't let me edit which means I get to just post another instead of adding it in.
Apparently I'm super crappy at finding music- this is such a fantastic peice- I love Yearning- but I'm also accutely aware that the bellydance population kind of wants to die from overabuse.
I am sure this one will find the ranks as well to the done to death- but I wish there were more peices like this- that's my kind of music- I love it.

Here: http://www.amazon.com/Kermal-Oyounak/dp/B000S383E4
Regarding finding music -- I just copy/pasted the song title from the OP into google and this (Amazon download) was the first link to come up.
If that hadn't worked, I would have pasted it into emusic or itunes, maqam's mp3 site, or directly into Amazon.
