Old clip of Greek Belly Dancer
To
Someone in the 70's group found this amazing clip!
I'm guessing the bouzoukee player is Bournelis?

Re: Old clip of Greek Belly Dancer
That was pretty groovy, not many Greek bellydance clips on YT so always good to see something new.
What do you think of this one?

Re: Old clip of Greek Belly Dancer
Ok, I can't stop myself now, which I need to as I've got to go to bed, but I thought this clip was interesting.
Her name is Rosa Eskenazy, wondering if she is a Rembetika singer or some other style that I don't know.
Sorry Norma, I'll stop posting random clips in your thread but always like finding interesting stuff on YT!

Re: Old clip of Greek Belly Dancer
Hey Norma,
Actually the writing translates to Boubouka Anatalokos horos.
Boubouka is the dancers name and Anatalokos horos implies dance from the east.
I didnt hear the Bouzouki on this particular clip buit found another one shortly after it and heard the bouzouki without its player. It must have been from a movie scene as some customer was trying to hide his date, for whatever unknown reason he had covered her up with the free table cloth while she was sitting next to him. Yeah Right like that wont make a scene. Lols!
Anyhow it was interesting to note on the previous clip the Greeks back then were using a saxophonist. Hmm not sure on the instrument as it wasn't use much back in those day, but I guess pictures don't lie and tell a thousand stories.

Hi Mafadalo
and yes you're right on both subjects it is indeed Rosa Eskenazi and she was a famous Rembetico singer. For a Rembeti singer, she had outlived most of all the Rembetes from her era. It was reported she was in her late 80's or early 90's when she died back in the 1980s.
Although she is not singing here from this particular video clip, she is dancing to a old Rembetiko song and is still popular today (which could have possibly been written by the late Vassilis Tsitsanis - whom was another great Rembetiko performer) and this song is called 'O Haroklakis' which I think means someones name.

Love love love Boubouka. She did a lot of movies. There is a clip from bouzouki player Nicos Pourpourakis of her dancing with him at a birthday party- not in costume but in regular clothes that is awesome.
Found it:

Re: Old clip of Greek Belly Dancer
Thanks for the info guys! What a great collection of clips!
I found another one of Boubouka, only a short one:
I like the longer clip of Boubouka, that's the one they used to intercut with that Rosa Eskenazi clip. There is another infamous clip of Boubouka with only skirt and pasties but I won't post it here but it's easily found on Youtube. She still looked and danced great in the late 80's though!

Re: Old clip of Greek Belly Dancer
She's actually pretty good! I"m so glad to see these clips. After all the vehement protesting about how belly dancing isn't Greek, I was beginning to wonder why it was so popular in the Greek nights in the US. At least they had in their movies.
Another interesting thing is too see how the style of dance has changed so much. Forget about the Golden Era Egyptian dancers for now and just consider these Greek dancers and Turkish dancers. The dance then was much more raw and unskilled, then became more elegant and refined, but still raw, until now where it very choreographed and technique has sometimes replaced the feeling and rawness that you see in these older clips. (Not necessarily this clip where this dancer seems to have more control and technique than in some of the other clips.)Last edited by norma; 12-09-2011 at 07:26 PM.
