Thread: Asmahan

Hi, I just finished watching a clip on YouTube of the dancer Asmahan. Can someone please tell me her story, like what style dance does she do and where is she from. I really liked the clip I saw and it just peaked my curiousity about what are some of the different style of belly dance. For some reason I was thinking that maybe she was Lebanese. What are the differences in Lebanese versus Egyptian belly dance? Thanks

She is fantastic isn't she. She is a show dancer, they have a special name for it in Egypt. You can see her dressed up like cleopatra, or appearing in the featherd of a gigantic swan. She is from Argentina, and is a lovely kind person also.

Absolutely seconding what Caroline said... I love Asmahan, she's my new dance hero! She's just lovely.

Her family is all Flamenco dancers (as she was originally) and they were a bit put out that she gave up the Flamenco for Oriental dance. This may explain how come she has such a sense of drama.

I saw her for the first time at the opening show of the Nile Group Festival. She was great! She can be dramatic and cheeky, and she really seems to enjoy herself. Her Cleopatra entrance was fabulous.

Hi, Maria. No, we didn't meet but it's not because I didn't think of it! I did spend some time with one of your students but I can't recall her name. She is pretty slim and her sister was also there. I think she has been taking lessons for less than a year. I helped her sister pick out skirts at Mahmoud's and I tried to find something for her at the festival to match some fabric she bought. She wound up buying a skirt, and I think that she is going to make her bra and belt. Please tell her to send me a picture when it's complete. I went over to her table at the beginning of dinner at the closing gala, but I think you were still in line. Then she had to leave in the middle of the show so I never got her to introduce us. You know how it is there - somehow you just seem to run out of time.

Any videos to purchase??? Still in a shopping mode here . . . my stack is still growing.

Awww probably you are speaking about Nelly (Nefeli) from Crete, the one of the 2 sisters :)
Hope next time we catch up, festivals tend to be a madness (and yes she is working on the costume)

I bought a VCD of all Asmahan on ebay about a month or so ago, but when I went to find the vendor name for you, I found they are no longer a registered user But if the VCD popped up once, maybe it will pop up again! The quality is reasonable, especially since it was under $10 including shipping. The first show on the VCD is difficult to watch with all the bizarre camera work, but the rest is fine. It also includes her caged tiger number, which I deeply admire and love ..g.:
