    Ouled Naïls' vintage video

Unfortunately this kodakchrome video from 1938 has no sound, but it's interesting anyway. Look at that pelvic strength!
    Cheers,

Ah! funny you should show this clip as I have recently been revising this style for a theatre piece called Funoon Aljazeera here in the UK.

I am choreographing the style from Bou Saada and also teaching Ouled Nail at the Jewel of Yorkshire festival in April Jewel of Yorkshire - Home

Love how the kid looks at the musician, like "C'mon! Your doing it wrong!"

Thanks for that. I just love to see these historical clips.

I danced with an Algerian woman once who did that tuck. She told me it was a "very special" belly dance.

Hummmm... I wonder what she meant with "very special"... Was she referring to style or difficulty level of the move?

I love this video, especially the fierce little girl. Thank you for posting it!

It's interesting to watch this and look also at modern Naili dance clips, like this

    Or this

Wish that second one especially were longer. (I still really like that white lacy Algerian niqab style, just on the aesthetics alone -- for anyone wondering, it's something you see a lot in Algeria, and it's really pretty.)

I think she meant style. I hadn't been dancing very long. She wasn't a trained dancer, just a normal Algerian woman who liked music and dancing, well-educated, a hijabi. She did a hilarious impersonation of "how all Algerian men dance" gleaned from sneaking to look at the guys in their separate room at parties.

WOW! Tiziri, is this the same style, but staged-up? (the youtube rabbit hole brought me to this clip from the one you posted)

It looks like the videos from Naili weddings (there's a few on YouTube; if you search on the names "M'sila" or "Bousaada", you're likely to pull up Naili dance) and the music is Naili.

Sorry, quick OT question...Tiziri, do you know if the expression المزمار من الشيطان from the comments in the video Lauren linked is in the Quran, or is it coming from the Hadiths? When I searched on it, it looks like it's pointing to the passages about the acceptability of music in Bukhari and Muslims.

Tourbeau, you're killing me. I had to go and look that one up.
Completely off topic, my apologies to all.
So, that reference is from the Hadiths. Those who have thoroughly studied these passages indicate that the reference (not attributed to the Prophet but to one of his confidants; Abu Bakr) is not a general disposition. Rather, it's that singing or music playing during an Eid, or a holy period, is a sin as it is a distraction from prayer necessary during such times.
Oh am I gonna hear it from my religious friends..

Thank you; faster on the draw and pithier than what I would have said!

Yes it was Abu Bakr and not the Prophet (saws) who said it...and the Prophet's response (from Aisha): "Leave them; there is an Eid [festival] for every nation and this is our Eid."

    Is music prohibited in Islam

Found that clip ages ago, such a shame it's so short.

Found a short documentary about the Ouled Nail, though this is only about the dancers not them in general, however I take exception to the origins of belly dance, as I'm pretty sure Badia Masabni had much to do with the Ouled Nail, but could be wrong...

Also found what looks like a very long documentary split up, in Arabic only, but that has music and performances from the Ouled Nail. The channel this comes from seems to have loads of traditional Algerian music and dance so one to explore as there's some great stuff on there. Be warned these clips below are long about 1/2 hour and 1 hour respectively (and slightly out of sync):
