Thread: Your Favorite Belly Dance Hip Hop Fusion Video... (GIVEAWAY)

Hey everyone!

I've decided to host a quarterly belly dance 'challenge' for each season of the year. The theme for this spring is Bellydance Hip Hop Fusion. I'm giving away 3 DVDs as prizes from World Dance New York: Bellydance Hip Hop Liquid Fusion, Bellydance Hip Hop Wave Explosion, and Android Goddess Tribal Fusion.

Here's how you enter to win Liquid Fusion and Wave Explosion:

1. Find an awesome example of a dancer fusing hip hop and belly dance (any styles thereof) on YouTube. Post your submission as a reply to this post, or privately through the form on my blog. Submissions are due Sunday, April 8th 2012 at noon.

2. Please include with your video submission a way to contact you (email address preferred), and a short description of why you like the video.

3. I’ll choose my favorite three submissions based on the criteria below and post them next week (Monday, April 9th). Readers will then watch and vote for their favorite. All votes will be due by Sunday, April 15th 2012 at noon. I’ll announce the winner of Liquid Fusion and Wave Explosion DVDS on April 16th.

What are the video submission rules?

The video must be uploaded to YouTube publicly. It should be 3-6 min. in length. You may submit footage of yourself as the dancer. One submission per household, please. You want to get your favorite in FAST, since I will only accept the first link to a video. If you submit a link to a video that’s already been submitted, I’ll notify you and you can try again (within the give time period). Open to residents of the U.S. only.

What criteria will you use to select the final three videos?

I’ll export the links to an external document so that I may review videos independent of your contact information to avoid any personal bias. I’m looking for dancers with great technique, appropriate expression and stage presence, as well as creative costuming. S/he should fluently blend styles in a way that is innovative while maintaining a genuine connection to both art forms. Extra points if the dancer is dancing to dubstep. The quality of the video does not matter.

What are the voting rules?

Anyone may vote a total of one time. Yes, you may solicit friends and family to vote for your submission. You can encourage them to vote by telling them about the bonus giveaway…

Bonus GIVEAWAY!

Anyone who votes for any one of the three final videos during the week of April 9th to 15th is eligible to win the third DVD, Android Goddess: Tribal Fusion Bellydance.

So to summarize... submit a video and, if chosen, you win Liquid Fusion and Wave Explosion. Vote for any of the videos in the top three, and you are entered to win Android Goddess.

What a terrific opportunity to publicize a local talent -- this is PixieNyx of Aalim Dance Co in St. Louis. (wish I had footage of her dancing to dubstep, I'm sure it's happened!)



What I like about this video: Pixie is so incredibly strong and fluid - except when she's being sharp as a knife. She chooses movements that make the most of her slight frame, and she is *always* aware of the lines she's creating; not just her torso, arms and legs, but the line of her head and neck... every hair follicle is perfectly aligned at every moment. Her movements always seem to flow from center, she interprets her music exquisitely, and she seems to defy gravity and laws of physics when she dances.

I have no experience with belly-hip-hop fusion (which is funny because I dance both, independently), so I really want to see what you all are posting as your faves!

Love, love, love this dance! There's an ease and playfulness to it that are just flat-out fun. She seems totally comfortable with both bellydance and hiphop, so it really works as fusion, IMO.

As for what I love about the clip:

- The dancer is young and amazingly talented for her age.
- Her costume is adorable & has additude. Somehow it seems to fit the music and belly dance perfectly at the same time - the right vibe
- Most importantly her dancing is amazing! the choreography is great, and she pulls it off with so much swag!
- and finally, I am a longtime Sean Paul fan so she cant go wrong by me

A couple years old, but still love it. I think this was the first hip hop fusion I saw. A flavor of hiphop, but first and foremost, good bellydancing.

No hate for dubstep.. .just don't know of any clips where anyone has bellydanced to it!

I think what tips the balance -- beyond the dance itself -- is the 1000-watt smile. She's so *with* her audience.

I was going to leap up on here and say Ewww, bd hh fusion, wtf? But, um, I really, really like this. She had me at her hip circles. She's awesome.

It's a little nostalgic, was one of the first fusion videos I stumbled across several years ago. I like that she has a hiphop flavor, but is still mainly belly dancing. I also like that it's not a tribal fusion-y, robot dance-y version of hiphop fusion.

every weekend I go to Cous Cous- the owner mixes and dubstep happens... and yes there is all sorts of BD/Dubbing going on .. tis gooooooooood :)
