    Melaya Leff

Where is a good place to learn this style of dance? Can anyone suggest videos or teachers that travel? Reda Troupe? Which ones???

I'm also interested in the songs that you like for this...

    Thanks!

Where are you? Denise Enan is based in Quebec and is a fantastic source on meleya. Her website is Denise Enan - Bellydance, Raks Sharki, Egyptian fokloric, Baladi, danse orientale, folklore égyptienne - Studio Oasis - tours, trips voyages Egypt Égypte

Aida Nour has another style of meleya and is also well worth learning from.

Music should be upbeat baladi style - or some more modern pop also has the right feel.

You can also do a little search here on Bhuz, this has been discussed many times.

I don't know if he travels to your area, but Mohamed Shahin gives a great workshop on it.

Magdy El-Leisy also has a video of Melaya Leff.

TammyRaks, would you give a little resume of Faten Melaya lef DVD? I would like to know how long the practice session is. &/or performance. (not liking instructional DVDs particularly - i like about 20 min continuous movement so that the DVD is of use in terms of getting some exercise)

    Western PA....

I first saw Mohammed perform the Melaya Leff a few years ago but his classes were a Saidi choreo and another Egyptian Oriental choreo...

I did the search for prvious Bhuz topics, but I can't search much more than a few months in the past...is there an archive?

Everything suggested so far is great, thanks!

    Hi there!

I've taken Faten Salama & Mohamed Shahin's maleya leff workshops. Both were great!

Faten does Alexandrian style with emphasis on holding & opening the meleya. She has a CD with her traditional meleya leff music on it to use. If you notice, she uses a "converted" meleya, which is the size of a veil, because of her size & she prefers something more maneuverable.

Mohamed Shahin was great too. He taught Alexandrian style which emphasized a swaying movement and use of meleya. He used a more modern music at the workshop.

I first saw Mohammed perform the Melaya Leff a few years ago but his classes were a Saidi choreo and another Egyptian Oriental choreo...

It seems that you have taken a class with Mohamed Shahin already. Just a warning, I had signed up for his workshop 'cause it was advertised as meleya leff, but due to a greater student demand, he taught mostly saiidi techniques& only had time (30 minutes) for meleya. It happened again at another workshop where it was advertised as Andalusian style, but he focused more on saiidi cane. I wasn't upset, it was all good. But if you attend his workshop, make sure the sponsor confirms with you what he plans to teach in case you travel a distance to attend...

I placed a tie for 3rd place at the Midwest bellydance competition Aug 25th in Chicago with a meleya leff performance. The song I love to use is "Banat Bahri" from Wash ya Wash volume 2.

Have not tried Cairo style yet. Good luck!
