interesting fusion piece
I see ME, ballet and some hi/lo in here.
the costume is minimalistic, but the movements really convey what the dancer (not me) seemed to want to convey.

Re: interesting fusion piece
Yay, Kina! I love positive, and I love seeing creative merging of art forms, especially if done well and with mindfulness! This woman moves incredibly well!
Not so much a deliberate horn-tooting as it is a fact that there are events which honour "fusion" dance, there is a festival I produce in the Philadelphia area called FUZEFEST. We didn't have it this past summer b/c I was in the midst of moving to Montreal, but we've had it every year since 2003 and here is the mission:
FUZEFEST celebrates the vivid tapestry of “world fusion” –the merger of distinct MUSIC and DANCE traditions from around the globe and invites dancers and musicians, novice and expert alike, to experience and learn how to “fuze” from a lineup of recognized artists in their respective fields of rhythm and movement.
We teach music and dance all day and then there is a big show in the evening. Our workshop special guests so far have been West African drummer, Zeva Soroker from Venus Rising (Fort Lauderdale), Khady (Afro-Brazilian dancer based in Philadelphia), Domba! (Tempe, AZ; they taught Afro-Belly and banghra), Kun-Yang Lin (from Taiwan, he taught modern dance technique) and Princess Farhana (fan dancing and lecture on fusion).
It's always a very positive experience and since Bill Koutsouros, co-founder, and I normally work together in a Middle Eastern dance context, Middle Eastern music/dance is always at the core. I think it's valuable to know from what discipline one is fusing, in order to do the "fuser" and "fusee" arts justice.
One of my favorite contributions thus far has been a number I did with a tabla player and turntablist called "TurnTabla." We performed all together and I combined their respective musical styles; bharata natyam, hip hop/house/crunk with some Middle Eastern stylings (choosing my words very carefully here!). Lots of fun.
One of the reasons we do this festival is an acknowledgment that humans are multi-faceted. There is nothing wrong with strictly sticking to one dance tradition or style; that breeds experts and educators, which we need to maintain contact with the historical background. We also can embrace those who wish to express their multi-facetedness (OK, I just made up that word, I'm sure it's not in the dictionary) and who enjoy delving into several different disciplines, in the name of fun, personal expression and so forth. I am all for stretching the boundaries of art, which stirs dialogue, introspection, and debate.
We're still trying to figure out if/how we would do it next year. I miss it. :0)
I think the important thing is education and an open attitude.Last edited by Azhia; 12-30-2007 at 12:12 AM. Reason: added a linky poo

I love the way that she moves. The more I watch, the more i see the different dance stylings that she put into this.
I'm also amazed at how she fast without losing precision she can do some of these movements, her limbs actually blur...
I would love to attend an event such as the one that you write of. Please post more so that we can keep it the calendar.- A deeply desired goal gives context to present experience... M. Stanton Jones

Re: interesting fusion piece
I believe that's what makes a good fusion dance artist; his/her ability to present, clearly, the various dance styles in a flawless manner. Good find! And very conscientious of you to seek permission first prior to posting. ;0)

Re: interesting fusion piece
Cera that was just awesome *applauds*
Watching a dancer so freely, and seamlessly, changing it up through her various dance skills to interpret every nuance in the music felt quite indulgent. And very enjoyable.
As dancers, having such technical proficiency, coupled with complete control of a well trained body, can only help in using our body as a tool for expression. Wether it be experimental or traditional arts.
