If any of you are interested in the Zar I have just posted a mini-documentary on YouTube.

I'm impressed you know who she is! I worked with her in Egypt. I learned how to shimmy from her.
I'm glad you liked the clip. I'm having serious problems figuring out how to get around the compression problems of YouTube though. You'd never know it, but the program is broadcast quality.

Bobby Farrah, who started Arabesque magazine, wrote some of his first articles about the zar. He claimed that it was Nadia Gamal who was responsible for putting it into her Lebanese shows in the 60s.

I havent got much footage of her but I was so impressed by the footage that I have got. I have always wanted more of her.
I have that zar footage of her wearing red and another performance of her on that same tape. I think its the cairo festival or something like that. I just love her style and energy. It took me ages to find out her name.

In my opinion she is one of the best dancers of the 1980s. She wasn't as pretty, flamboyant, naughty or downright outrageous as most of the others, but her shimmy technique was the best. Her drum solos were much better than Mona Said's. You are absolutely right, it is very sad there isn't more footage available of her.
Lauren, I am glad you liked it. My goal was to show the reasons why the dance is so important to these women. It is not just an excuse to flip hair around. Some of the other youtube clips I saw don't get the idea that the dance means a great deal to the women who do it.Last edited by Serpentine; 04-29-2007 at 04:24 PM.
