    Turkish Romani, Havasi Romani

    [ame=http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZsLbbgnOPuI]YouTube - Oryantal Reyhan & Sefarad Sammy Romanlar[/ame]

I love this. I saw it for the first time in New York at Morocco's week long. Jessiah rocked this out. Now I gotta get back to take a class with her. She studied extensively in Turkey with the Romani people. Does anyone else teach it? Like maybe in the mid-west. I have seen alot of bad fake "gypsy" fusion. This is the first time I really liked it. It's so earthy and funky.

If you love Romani, you must find a way to get to DC for the Herdeljezi Festival Saturday, MAY 17. Reyhan Tuzsuz, one of Jessiah's Rom teachers from Turkey will be there along with other instructors teaching authentic Roma dances from India, Russia and the Balkans. While you are in the DC area you can also take advantage of the opportunity to study with Artemis who has been study Turkish Rom for years. The registration info isn't up for 2008 yet, but you can always mark your calendar. I went last year and it was sooo worth it. The classes and the music were great. here are photos from last year:

World Music Folklife Center - Annual Roma/Gypsy Festival 2007

Here's the registration page for next year that you can keep an eye on for updates:

World Music Folklife Center - Register

And this is the woman to email (Kostana, who is also a great local resource on Romani dancing) to ask for more information about the festival and the World Music Folklife Center:

    Home

    here is Artemis' website:

    Serpentine home page

And here is a photo of Reyhan teaching:

She is the real deal and wonderful!

Oh yeah, other people I know who teach Turkish Rom in the US (none of which are in the midwest...sorry, Ahmet Leluci (Massachusetts), Eva Cernik (Colorado), Hadia (Canada), Jessiah (NY) you've already met, Janet Shook when she is in town from Turkey (Utah), Delpha when she is in town from Turkey (Oregon) and Elizabeth Strong (California).

If you can't make it to study with any of these teachers, you might just have to go to Istanbul. :-)

While I'm on the subject, you might also want to consider coming to the folktours camp in Pennsylvania Folk Tours Music and Dance events in the United States and Turkey,Tours of Turkey, Educational dance workshops in authentic Turkish, Romany (Gypsy), Folk and Oriental (bellydance) dances The Turkish style dance teaching staff includes Artemis, Tayyar and Ibrahim who are all great to learn from, but even better than the classes are the concerts. The musicians are insanely good and last years show with Tayyar, Ibrahim, Artemis, Aszmara and Dalia Carella blew me away by how good it was. Then we got to dance and party all night to the most amazing music. Seriously check out these musicians:

Music Teachers/Camp USA / Folk Tours Music and Dance events in the United States and Turkey,Tours of Turkey, Educational dance workshops in authentic Turkish, Romany (Gypsy), Folk and Oriental (bellydance) dances

and don't underestimate the quality of the "SPECIAL GUESTS!" - if it's anything like last year you will be knocked out by how amazing it is.

I would also recommend their camp in Turkey, but I heard rumor they are going to stop doing it. I think too much competition whittled down their base of support. But I do think the Mendocino peops have started doing one and will hold theirs next year and many other people do these too Middle East music culture dance seminar bellydance folklore folk dancing

I love a good earthy Turkish ROM! Unfortunately, I still totally suck at it, which is why I'm hosting Hadia for a Turkish ROM workshop in Ontario May 24 & 25. Come on down, if you can!

Folktours in Pennsylvania is amazing , i am planning to go back this year.

They will do the Turkish camp this year again, I bumped into Tayyar in Istanbul a couple of weeks ago he was planning the 2008 camp, but they are changing the dates from what he told me.

I dont know where you are located but last year i took a class with Sahra who spent a few months studying with reyhan in istanbul.

Sahra is part of ultra gypsy and Barbary coast shakedown, i tought she did a pretty good job of breaking it down.

Ferda Beyazit really impressed me last year at the Toronto bellydance conference , she is a great dancer and i wished we could have taken more private classes with her.

This year she will be teaching a workshop at the toronto conference in April and also i noticed that Ozgen ( turkish dancer now in the UK) will be there dancing on the main stage, i really hope he will do his Turkish roman dance. his video was posted a in this thread.

Alas, this is one of my favorite subjects and I'm just rushing through. One comment re. instruction in the US - don't miss any opportunity to do workshop with Artemis Mourat!
But also, no discussion about Turkish Romani dance would be complete without mention of our fellow Bhuzzard Ahmet Ogren (Gypsyahmet), whose pic just happens to be on display right now in the recent pics on the home page (the guy in black with bright red shirt). Fabulous, fabulous interpretations of the Romani style, to which he is particularly devoted. He has a website, also some videos on YouTube.

I took a couple of classes with Ahmet a coupld of weeks ago, i found he was a good teacher. I appreciated that he took the time to correct me.
I love Reyhan , but i wish i could just sit down and watch her dance for hours and hours but because she cant really correct you or slow down when you are having trouble it is a whole different type of class. Ahmet was really helpful in this way and stopped me whenever i wasnt doing something right.

Of course I probably wouldnt be doing thsi if I hadnt seen Artemis dance in the first place and taken workshops with her . I took a wonderful 1 week Turkish intensive at her studio a few years ago. I dont know if she will do that again , but that was one absolutely amazing information packed week intensive because the whole week was focused on everything Turkish (music, oriental+rom).

That might work. I"ll be in DC for memorial weekend for the Belly Dancers of Color Associaton Festival. I may have to just come early for that too. Two weeks in DC wouldn't hurt at all. thanks

Yeah , Reyhan is a total watch and follow kind of teacher. (Not that I mind, I actually like learning that way). Does Ahmet ever make it out to the states?

i like watch and follow but what i think i need is an explanation on that rhythm. i have a hard time following it. which is strange to me because usually i can just pick up rhythms. but the way i want to dance to it is not what they are doing.

Artemis then, you must take from Artemis. She would be my top recommendation. But if you can get with any of the teachers listed here, then it will be great for you.

Artemis breaks down the rhythm and teaches to it on her Turkish video pretty thoroughly.

Tayyar Adkeniz is a brilliant & fun instructor in this style who will also break down the rhythm for you 10 different ways until you get it. LOVE him!!!

Hi Ladies, May i suggest you something ? If you are interested in Roman dance, first of all you need to try to understand their lifes and their musics. 5th on May, there will be a gypsy festival in Turkey, i recommend you to visit that.

I agree with Ahmet 100 percent. If you really want to learn this dance you need to understand the culture. I highly recommend studying with Reyhan either here or in Turkey. She is coming to Herdeljezi this May 17 in Washington, DC.
I also teach Turkish Rom in the MD/VA area, and have a very good system for breaking down steps and for understanding 9/8. I was a musician before dancing, and my husband used to folkdance, and has been a drummer for 30 years, and he has helped me develop this system.
Jessaiah in NY would also be able to help you break down Reyhan's movements.
The Herdeljezi Festival is unique because we have classes all day in Romani music and dance from around the world including Spain, India, Turkey, Hungary, Romania, Transylvania, Macedonia, etc. (it varies each year) by instructors who are mostly Roma or have lived among and studied Romani culture and are extremely qualified to teach. Then there is an evening party with live music by Romski Boji (Seido Salifoski's Romani band) and open dancing.
In addition, we try to raise money to help Romani people. This year if we meet expenses, we will be donating a portion of proceeds to help Reyhan's family find a new home. Their home in Gazi Osman Pasa along with the rest of their neighborhood is being destroyed.
In any case, if you're interested in Romani culture, dance and music, this is a great place to explore the dances from many different countries.
Plus, Reyhan is teaching a 2 hour workshop on Sunday, May 18, so you can really make it worth your while and stay both days!
She will also be teaching in Ny and NJ while she is here this time.
Thanks for posting info on the festival, as I don't often get the time to get on here and post!
