Rita Hayworth as Salome.
I really enjoyed watching this. I know it's fantasy and not authentic but I like watching this kind of clip , it reminds me of being a child and watching Sinbad the Sailor etc. Sorry if it's been posted before.

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
I agree, it's fun watching some of the old Hollywood portrayals of "Middle Eastern dance". Some are wonderful (such as Nejla Ates' performance in Son of Sinbad) and others are so bad they're funny (such as the performance to the song Little Egypt in the Elvis movie Roustabout). I've amassed a collection of clips that I've extracted from movies, and I'm always on the lookout for more!

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
Jeez, did you ever see Greta Garbo's dance in "Mata Hari"? Truly ridiculous, although I really enjoyed the movie otherwise.
I haven't seen "Salome" yet, although I adore Rita Hayworth. She's my favorite of all the classic Hollywood movie queens (one look at that moment in "Gilda" where she tosses her hair and says, "Who, me?" and I instantly wanted to look and act just like that). Thanks for posting this.

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
pretty good interpretation but isn't it interesting that there's no torso or hip movement?
Also that's a great naked dress at the end.

I love it when she does the split and then kinda pounds the veil on the floor. So funny!

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
Oh, the lustful, degenerate, power hungry older generation exploiting the beautiful young girl.
Rita Hayworth was a real dancer, and it sure shows. Much classier than the stupid belly dancing in Charlie Wilson's War, though still a total fantasy, of course.
We don't really know how people danced in the year 32 or so of the Common Era.
Loved the use of all the colors of silk chiffon and the nude dress at the end.

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
I haven't seen this movie in eons!!! Oooo, Sinbad and Ali Baba were great too... I've not watched any of these since I started bellydancing but doesn't it make you wonder if it wasn't in fact glamorous actresses like Rita & Greta attempting to mimick bd that first sparked our interest? Looking at it now I think it probably was for me -- I can remember thinking how beautiful they were and pretending to be them...

Wow, the Nejla Ates one is so cool. Instead of making progress with the image of bellydancers in movies, we've gone backwards! No movie nowadays will show more than a few seconds of a dance, it seems. And it's never a real bellydancer.

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
Thanks for posting! These old clips are great to watch & fun too! It's always interesting to see how dance has been portrayed and how many "versions"
of dance people think are belly dance. The variations of Salome alone when referenced from a biblical point of view are "to put it nicely - different".
I'm an avid collector of movies, books, lps, magazines and more. There is so much information in them that is both accurate and "artistic". But then this dance is artistic with incredible cultural roots that are fascinating to learn. The more you find, the more you want to learn!
I love reading Shira's website for the latest items she finds! Someday I'd love to see her collection in person.
hum...Shira, maybe you could post a couple photos of your collection so we could all live vicariously through you? ..g.:

i was thinking that very thing
i think i'm gonna search for the clips in star trek (the opening sequence in 'wolf in the fold', i think she may be an actual belly dancer, and the orion slave girl in the pilot (more sex than oriental, but the moves were there
), not to mention at LEAST 3 james bond flicks

Ah, yes Vina (Susan Oliver) was the original Orion Slave Girl. I'm a Trekkie and that's one of my favorites. Love the music too!

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
Is Salome's dance really supposed to be bellydance? I mean, who decided that it was 'bellydance' and when?

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
Salome has been portrayed many ways over the years including Oscar Wilde who had a great deal to do with that image.
To keep it short, Shira has some info great info here: Dance of the Seven Veils
Sisters of Salome is a book I read last summer while on travel and found it very interesting too.

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
Yes, the dancer in Wolf in the Fold was Tanya Lemani. There's a thread about her autobiography in the "Product News and Reviews" section of bhuz titled something like, "Attention all Trekkies". Her autobiography was released this past fall, and titled Have Belly Will Travel. I'm the process of reading it now - I'm about 1/3 of the way through it so far.

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
I love your site too, I've listened to the programmes for years, but I was one of the listeners who preferred the format before the podcasts. For me it was better when I could identify which tune I was listening to.
However,it's still a wonderful resource, and I do thank you for providing it and for all the hard work you've put into it over the years.

Re: Rita Hayworth as Salome.
Jahbie, agreed. Not only could I identify what I was listening to, but I could even deconstruct the playlist and take what I wanted out, perhaps to make a playlist with only the instructional tracks. That would be handy.
Thank you for all your hard work, though, Marisa. You're program is an invaluable resource for us vintage belly dance fans.
