Leona Wood-a great treasure-RIP
I don't post a lot on bhuz... but I thought those dancers who don't know of Leona Wood and her amazing influence on dance, art, and literature
should study this amazing womans life work and the meticulous care she took in recreating folkloric dances, costuming, writing. She set the bar so high no one can come close. Leona had a huge effect on me, She will be GREATLY missed!
If you can get your hands on vol19 # 2 Habibi she is on the cover with a great article about her by Susan Marshal
I think this is a must read for every dancer.. click on part I and part II "Danse du venture-a fresh appraisal"

Thanks for posting this, Melody! I am very sad to hear about this. I first heard of her after seeing this beautiful drawing she did of Jamila Salimpour that appeared on the cover of one of my vintage vinyl LPs:

Peaceful rest, Leona, and thank you so much.

She made many valuable contributions to the study of ethnic dance. May she rest in peace.

aloha
i'm truly saddened to learn of the exquistite leona woods' passing...
a dear friend of min, jaynie rabb, a long time pupil of aisha ali, told me many stories about ms. woods...
i have admired her, as ibrahim bobby farrah, from afar, and know that each dancer is ultimately indebted to leaders, advocates, artists and seeker like her.
mahalo nui loa, xie xie, shokran gazillion and thank you ms. wood, for being a brilliant star in a sea of darkness.
