    Khaleeji/Saidi/Raks Assaya

    Recommendations for good learning/teaching resources?
DVDs or real people with whom to study...
Also, good music recommendations for any of the above.
I've studied cane with Faten Salama once (LOVED IT). I own the Sharif Raks Assaya DVD (LOVE IT).
    Want more now...

I study with Faten now!! Check out her website. I think one of those DVDs has some of these elements. She sells her items to her students for a little cheaper, so I may be able to get you a deal. I'll check with her next class (Sunday).

Tamra-henna is holding an Assaya workshop next weekend; something about masculine versus feminine or soft versus strong expressions with the cane... anyways, I'm really looking forward to it. Here's a clip:

Aisha Ali was the other person that came to mind...I know it's not the specialty for which she is most well-known, but watching her handle a cane was enlightening for me.

For Khaleegi, you can't beat Kay Hardy Campbell. Does anyone else in the US teach Khaleegi?

Mohamed Shahin teaches great Saidi technique, among other things.

Faten Salama is the QUEEN of Khaleegy. I've never seen anyone do it like her, or love it as much as she does! Surely she teaches it on one of her videos?

The Sharifs are wonderful for cane/Saiidi instruction, but I don't think they're traveling for workshops at the moment.

I learned Khaleegy from Kay and others, have been studying it for years, and teach Khaleegy whenever I can. I really like the Saudi version over other Gulf styles. It's the dance of my heart. I'm getting ready to teach this style in my Advanced Folkloric class starting tomorrow night.

You can see an early performance on Yasmin's "Lifting the Veil of Time," available on Amazon.

Ooooooo--I've been very into saidi/raks assaya in recent years myself--studying in private lessons as well as any other workshops etc. I could (and I just tought another workshop on it yesterday.:-) Some of my favorites domestically are Nourhan Sharif and Aisha Ali. Another one who may be less obvious...Beba of Cairo. She hasn't been to the US much (I think the first time was last year when she came to Dallas) and she didn't do cane/saidi at that workshop, but she does travel/do workshops overseas a fair amount, so maybe we'll see more of her. I took privates on saidi with her in Cairo--she was very very good with Saidi/raks assaya.

As far as Khaleegy, I'll second (or third or fourth...) Kay Hardy Campbell--she's fab! I'm sure there must be others, though.

If you are willing to expand US to North America, Yasmina Ramzy teaches khaleegi, or at least she did when I took a workshop with her last summer.

I'm taking a cane workshop with Mohamed Shahin in Boston in May, so so so excited!!!

You're in Canada and so is Hadia! Who does an amazing cane dance, and Saidi.
