Sudanese Dance / Music ???
Maybe I'm dreaming it, but I swear I can hear a consistent rhythm in some of the Sudanese "bellydance" music I have. I'm looking for information about Sudanese traditional music -- as it relates or doesn't to bellydance :)
Also, any good resources for Sudanese dance? I had a video of Sahra Kent doing (supposedly) some kind of Sudanese dance, but it has mysteriously hidden itself. Any other videos? Anything online?
And also, just cause it has "Sudani" or something in the song title -- does that mean it's really Sudanese?
Thanks in advance for the help!!

Re: Sudanese Dance / Music ???
There is a video by Morocco on folk dances from Egypt, Nubia, and the Sudan. The Sudan section is short, but it's there. This was filmed a couple of decades ago, before the spread of pop culture caused traditional music/dance to erode. The video also includes a performance by the Banat Maazin Ghawazee.

Re: Sudanese Dance / Music ???
I have that video -- my understanding was that was the National Folkloric Troupe performing. Am I incorrect? I'll drag it out and look at it again. I remember watching it th first time and thinking, " this doesn't help" but it's been a while ...
Did this just not catch on as a popular style, or is it not "Middle Eastern" enough for us anymore?

Re: Sudanese Dance / Music ???
It has been a while since I watched it, but I seem to remember there was a section on traditional Sudanese. You're right that folk troupe re-interpretations don't help much.
I don't think Sudanese ever really caught on as a popular style among the belly dance community. Most belly dancers that I know have focused their folkloric education on the "north of the Sahara" dance traditions.

Gawaher(Jawahir etc)is a pop singer with many great hits, love her!
She sings in arabic, and has been successful in Egypt.
(In Sudan, the official language is arabic, although I doubt everyone speaks it...they have at least 3 other languages and many dialects)

Re: Sudanese Dance / Music ???
Thanks for the clips!! I have a Gawaher CD and love it.
I'll start looking around for people who teach "African" dance -- this seems like it might fall into that category a little better.
