Angelina (Dahlena's daughter) and Alexandria are sponsoring Mohammed Shahin weekend of June 21-22. On Saturday, he will teach a MASTER CLASS at Belle Plaine Studio. Prior to this, several out-of-state dancers who have specialties OTHER than Egyptian-style dance will be conducting TECHNIQUE CLINICS
Natasha of Portland is definately doing "Chiftitelli with Attitude" which will focus on turkish technique. I am doing American Greek Style Caberet. Shadia from Detroit is doing khaleegy and finger cymbals.
The Sunday workshops will be held at another studio-Visceral Dance on Elston by Western and Diversey. Mohamed will be teaching Folkloric styles-Saidi with cane and another stunning Raqs Sharqi classic egyptian routine. Both workshops, as well as Saturday's Master Class, will be 2 hrs in length. All 3 clinics will be 90 minutes each and are priced separately from Mo's workshops. Of course you will all save if you pre-pay before June 1 and also if you " buy in bulk!'
The showcase concert will be at Al Hambra Palace on Sunday at 8pm....this is your chance to see quality dancers in a truly gorgeous, unparalleled setting! Following our showcase, Detroit star Tony Bahu will rock the stage-bring your dancing shoes cuz you have never heard such an innovative, irresistable, dancable fusion of western and middle-eastern music!!! Show Tickets are $20 prior to June 1, $25 after, menu is completely separate (but delicious)!
More details to follow soon.

Re: Save the date, June 21, 22 Chicago, Mohammed Shahin
Thanks for your question Angelique. Because it was such a great question I decided to post here. Mo's workshops and my workshop as well, are geared for dancers who have experience. However, if you are interested in taking something, and you know in advance that you might not have the skill level for that workshop but you still want to attend, I say go for it. Let the teacher and sponsor know ahead of time that you want to stay in the background and just observe, if you don't feel you can "keep up".
I know that most instructors take into account that there is a wide range of skill level among attendees and teach accordingly.
My own workshop presumes a certain skill level but since it is a genre that may be unfamilar to many dancers, I intend to gear it to both the beginner novice and the more advanced dancer who is unfamilar with the format.
In my workshop I intend to focus on the various types of rhythms you might encounter in the American Greek format and at least 3 steps to follow!

I am looking forward to it too! I just need to send in my registration. In retrospect, I should have just given it to Angie when I saw her at Dahlena's workshop.
Alexandria, it will be nice to see you again. It has been awhile since our paths have crossed. ..g.:

Re: Save the date, June 21, 22 Chicago, Mohammed Shahin
Great, can't wait to meet you. Like I said in my pm to you: I've decided to restructure my class to accomodate both beginners and more advanced students. Because the music is so different-very fast, if you are used to Arabic music even advanced students may struggle, so I decided to take it the very basics.
The show should be great. I enjoyed it last year, and Mohammed Shahin's tanoura is absolutely mesmerizing. I'm pretty jaded after all my years of performing but I broke out with a grin just watching his performance. Several other greatly talented dancers are performing as well. And of course the venue can't be matched!!!!

I do know that for Mo's workshop you do have to be at least an intermediate to advance dancer. I believe Shadiah's workshop will be geared for beginners. I'm not sure about Natasha.

Re: Save the date, June 21, 22 Chicago, Mohammed Shahin
Mohammed's classes are precisely why I'm a little nervous, especially since I've read on the gilded serpent that most middle eastern dancers teach by 'following the bouncing butt". But then again, where in Chicago can I learn reda-style dancing? I just hope I won't be too lost...

Re: Save the date, June 21, 22 Chicago, Mohammed Shahin
As long as you concentrate you should be fine. He doesn't speak great English so don't expect a lot of detail explanation, but his class is very structured and choreographed and he does spend a lot of time repeating sequences.
I myself learned from the bouncing butt method initially! I don't teach that way however!

Re: Save the date, June 21, 22 Chicago, Mohammed Shahin
I attended a saiidi workshop today. While he does teach by the bouncing butt, he is articulate and speaks English well enough to teach to about 45 dancers today with no one complaining that they couldn't understand him.
He may not know the anatomically correct names for body parts in English, but he did a wonderful job.
I highly recommend his workshop.- A deeply desired goal gives context to present experience... M. Stanton Jones

I also thought he was a very good explainer, using our words for movements (hip-drop, camel, etc) which is unusual for an Egyptian. He was very good at articulating the choreography and helping people who needed help. I was super-super-impressed. It was all the good things of having an Egyptian teacher in terms of knowledge, musicality, "Egyptian"-ness...but also the ability to break down movements, describe things, correct. At no time did I feel that he was struggling for words.

Re: Save the date, June 21, 22 Chicago, Mohammed Shahin
Thats great to read. I think I'll be able to follow along if I am given an overview of the steps/combinations in the choreography.
05-12-2008 10:49 AM #27Re: Save the date, June 21, 22 Chicago, Mohammed Shahin
I'm already signed up so as long as I can move something while he's teaching, that will be what I need to get out of my comfort zone. It's with things I've never done before which is why I'm glad Norma's class will be more basic - I've had very little Greek training.

Does anybody know if we can still purchase a ticket to the showcase on line after June 1? I didn't want to wait until the actual date to buy another one so I bought one yesterday through paypal. If you need the five extra bucks I'll give it to Alexandria or Angelina when I show up at the workshops. Is that okay?
