So how did it go? :o)

I thought it was a very nice, positive,uplifting event. The event was put on by StandWithUs.com, Alpha Epsilon Phi and Hillel to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Israel's Independence. Even though there were protesters, Palestinian-supporter student groups, I feel everyone conducted themselves in a dignified manner and were able to express their views in a civilized way. I truly believe the folks seemed to really enjoy the bellydancin'. We ran into some technical difficulties when we had to "throw out" songs with Arabic lyrics and stuck with all instrumentals BUT...I was lucky enough to find some Jewish songs sung in Spanish/Hebrew(!) from my Fiesta Orientale Alabina CD!!! Lemme tell ya, Hava Nagilla (sp?) with a funky Spanish-Bellydance flair was a HUGE Hit! Much audience participation there! ..l;, Zaghareet to Jane!!!

Here's a link to the article in the local paper that came out the next day: Wish they had more pictures of the 3 of us bellydancers w/the crowd (when it got bigger as our dancing continued), instead of the 1 teensy-tiny pic, but I guess the focus was really on the event (and the protesters). But I truly appreciated what Elisha (Charisse's Israeli-born hubby) had to say on the event, in general.

Congrats! It sounds like it went well--all things considered. I graduated with my M.A. in English from NIU and spent several years working on my Ph.D. there. I taught belly dance to a few ladies in my degree program back in the early 1990's. Since I also taught English 101 at the university, along with some local community colleges, I didn't perform in public back then. It's fun to hear about your experience. :o)
