Thread: Bellydance in Switzerland?

I may be going to Switzerland for the second time in my life this mid-December!
The first time I went on vacation/holiday. This time, I will visiting family. Although I will be pretty tied up in family events (I will be meeting new relatives for the first time), I would like to know of any dance events occurring.

I know Meissoun is in Switzerland and so is Zeyna. Can someone point me in the right direction? I would love to attend a show and also have a recommendation for great restaurants!

Hi, Meissoun! I was in Kreutzlingen a few weeks ago -- not much belly dance going on in that conservative area!!..l;,

Kreuzlingen is mainly a Hilal enclave... And I was very surprised to learn that there are VERY few dance teachers in the close by Konstanz, a university town with about 81'000 inhabitants!

So the best places in German speaking Switzerland are Zurich, Bern and Basel. They have the most schools, restaurants and shows.

Funny how people have more capacity to enjoy and are more tolerant when not in their own habitat -- when John's sister came to visit SF from Connecticut, she came to my classes and enjoyed herself, and his relatives in Europe (Germany and Switzerland) seemed to enjoy a video we showed them of student night with myself,students, guest teachers and other dancers as well as me dancing in restaurants (my dancing is pretty conservative by any standards!) -- but when we were 'over there', they were pretty quiet whenever the topic of belly dancing came up........... I think in their minds, no matter how many pictures and videos we show them to the contrary, they still have a lingering image of the sleezy side of Turkish and American nightclubs in some not-so-nice parts of town! However, they acknowledge the growing interest in BD in "the big towns" -- Munich, etc ..... and Beatta and Horacia, of course, have done a lot to elevate the image in Hamburg....they just don't get to see much of what would really change their impression of the dance ...... so sad!

It really depends a bit on where you live. Oriental dance is HUGE in Zurich.
I sometimes wonder where all the students come from - like every third woman you meet in the streets must have taken or is still taking bellydance classes!
We also have several shops with costumes, music etc., regular shows and tons of workshops.

Do you teach in Zurich? I remember many youth hostels throughout Germany and Switzerland ....... it was fun traveling as a student ......
