know a great zill teacher in the WI area?

I'm always on the hunt for people to suggest to the local studio as candidates for their 3rd Saturday workshops. I thought it would be really cool to bring in someone to do a "zills beyond the basics" class. We play a lot of baladi here, and 3-3-7, but it would be fun to have a class with more variations and take-home drills.

This teacher could be a dancer or a musician, but somebody within reasonable driving distance of Madison WI, as it wouldn't be a whole day class. And it would need to be somebody whose talent I could witness (video maybe) before I could suggest them.

If you have any suggestions... love to hear them!

I don't know if I'd use the word "great," but I've done many zills workshops in and around the Chicago burbs. And I've traveled to Milwaukee to do workshops for Shaia (not zills, though). I just taught two zills workshops at the Midwest Belly Dance Convention in Ann Arbor last weekend. One workshop centers on listening to the music and finding the different rhythms, playing counterpoint, doing different beledi variations, 9/8 Kashlamar, as well as the standard 3s and its variations. The other workshop was a choreo drum solo with zills.

I don't have video, but I think if you contact some of the local instructors (and some Bhuzzers) who know me, you'll get some positive feedback.

(I also teach poi/veil, and hula if you're looking to step out of bd for a while.)

There's always Margo Abdo O'Dell or Cassandra.

I've never taken from Margo, I got her stuff second-hand from my teacher Erin Wallace. I especially like how Erin combines (very short) combinations with unusual (to me, anyway!) zill rhythms (she credited the rhythms to Margo's class). I don't know if Erin does workshops, though - I know the other two do!

I'm one of the local instructors, bhuzzer, and a loooongtime "graduate" student of Donna Diva's......don't let her fool you! She's one of the best zill players around! Just a natural, holds a great workshop for it, and has produced some pretty good zill players as proof.

Sounds like she'd be right for what you're looking for.

well...I know he's not within driving distance, but...I would SO recommend trying to bring Karim Nagi out...he is the best. He's an amazing teacher, performer, etc...

Otherwise, I agree about Cassandra. :)
