Thread: Live Music Showcase in Los Angeles Area

One of the few places a dancer can still perform to live music is Tonya's Belly Dance Showcase!

Wednesdays, 7:30-9:30pm
Khoury's
110 Marina Drive, Long Beach
(near Pacific Coast Highway)

This is a restaurant setting with a wood dance floor at table level, open to the GP, although most of the audience is made up of dancers and enthusiasts/friends. Sets are about 12-15 minutes each. Most sets are "shared" by 2+ dancers, each taking turns during each section of the show, fast--veil (slow-to-mod)--tip/table (mod-to-fast)--brief finale. Dancers new to the show are usually paired with a dancer experienced with the format. Dancers tip the musician 1/3.

Speaking of the musician . . . the renowned John Bilezikjian graces the musician's stage weekly, occasionally subbed by Viken Najarian. I believe dancers can also dance at break using CD -- must make arrangements when booking your date. The music is very melodic, with mostly Turkish/Armenian, some melodic versions of Arabic songs such as Maryam Ti, Aziza and others. Unfortunately, no drum solos . . .

I recommend that folks be at least solid high intermediates or above for this setting, due to the fact that the GP is in attendance.
